Virgin Atlantic want GLA.

VIRGIN boss Richard Branson’s right hand man, Will Whitehorn, has urged the incoming government to make a decision on building an airport hub for Scotland, and to site it in Glasgow.

Anything could work at a price.

The local residents would have something to say about that πŸ˜‰

Hey it’s only Linwood, nuke the joint I say ! (sorry DME) πŸ˜€

I’m sure it wouldn’t require a vast engineering project to ford the River Cart at the 23 end and extend over Greenock Road onto the farmland to create the necessary extra tarmac to handle types like fully laden 747’s and A340’s ?

It would perhaps require the road to go under the runway or be diverted somehow, but I’m sure it could work ?

I think instead of talk of 2nd runways at certain Scottish airports, longer ones should be on the agenda. GLA especially would stand to gain substantially from an extra couple of thousand metres.

I think Virgin would be attracted to PIK because of the runway size only just like BWIA were but i cant really see Virgin going to PIK with the terminal in its current state even with the Β£3m? makeover. I have always been in favor of a airport in central Scotland to serve both Glasgow and Edinburgh but thats a whole diffrent debate….

It’s an interesting and dare I say thorny subject?

Essentially what Virgin are looking for are three UK hubs top, middle and bottom. London and Manchester are already there, now they seem to be indicating a desire for the “top” hub to be based around the Greater Glasgow area?

Virgin and Virgin Holidays in particular do receive a lot of custom from North Britain and also Northern Ireland, as has been proven with other operators, it certainly makes sense to provide direct departure points from up here.

As for persuading the goverment to focus on developing GLA over EDI, I doubt it very much? Common sense and politics don’t often get mentioned in the same sentence. And at the risk of fanning the flames of an already worn out argument, Glasgow International already has a better infrastructure to support such services.

I’m tempted to suggest Virgin look at Prestwick, especially if they intend to operate their current long haul types (A340). With new ground transport improvements (rail/road) I think it’s got the makings of a great international airport once again.

I agree
