Flying on the A380, Singapore Airlines SIN-LHR

Strictly speaking, these photos should have been the last for me to upload at the end of my Round-the-World trip. However, there’s been quite a lot of A380 interest on the forum today and it’s going to take weeks for me to get to the end of my RTW shots, so I thought I’d show them now.

The flight was on 9V-SKB, from Singapore to London. Unfortunately it was a night flight, and so I was only able to take photos during the final 2 hours of the flight as the sun rose over Europe around 4:30am. The flight was fantastic, although after 13 hours I think most people would still be happy to get off.

When we first sat down in 36A it immediately felt more modern than any airliner I’ve stepped on. The windows were odd, huge on the inside but normal Airbus size on the outside….

And then there was the seatback, with the biggest PTV I’ve ever seen. I also liked that the IFE control was in the seatback, instead of digging into my elbow on the armrest. There was a handy little drinks holder, a coat peg, and even a USB slot so you could plug in your own camera/mp3 player/whatever to the screen. To finish it off, when you fold the tray out there is a little slide which revealed a mirror, so you could check yourself out in-flight.

The service on SQ was incredible, as I’d already come to expect from my previous 3 flights on them. In the toilets (Economy class!) there was aftershave/perfume, moisturiser, shaving razors/gel, mouthwash, hair combs etc etc. There were menus for the food, which was served with metal cutlery and hot towels afterwards.

This was my cabin taken just before they switched the lights off, I don’t really the 3-4-3 seating where you sit next to a stranger for 13 hours, constantly having to ask them to get up for the toilet etc.

Once the Sun rose I went for a little wander and had a look at the top deck. Here’s the Economy cabin on the top deck. It’s 2-4-2 therefore great if you’re in a couple. It also felt much more personal up here.

The rear stairs. It was strange walking up/down stairs on an aircraft.

Then there’s 3 views as we approach and land at LHR. The wing is absolutely huge; it covered about 20 rows + a large galley section. In the final shot you can see how the winglet almost disappears as the wing flexes so much on the ground due its crazy length.

I managed to get myself a quick look in the cockpit at the end of the flight, but unfortunately they were insistent that my camera stayed well inside my bag. I hope you enjoyed them, sorry there wasn’t more but it’s about the best I could manage when we only had 2 hours of sunlight during the entire flight.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Sam, the A380’s IFE was superb, the best I’ve seen. It just had a ridiculous number of movies, tv shows and music albums, I can’t imagine how even afrequent flyer would gt chance to watch it all.

chornedsnorkack, I actually found that the sidewall didn’t restrict the legroom at all. In fact, I felt that I had more shoulder and leg room in the window seat on the A380 than I have had on any other modern airliner.

Did the sidewall restrict the legroom in the A seat?

What about leaning against sidewall – did you tend to slip between setback and sidewall?

People, there is an excellent one: see second picture from below and look how great the vortices generated by the little strakes at the engine cowling go over the wing. Excellent shot, destined for airliners.net.

Stunning Shots Dan! (The second to last is the best though… all those 777’s :D)

How was the A380’s IFE? Could you compare it to ICE?

Very nice and interesting images, Dan. Looks like it was one hell of an experience!
