What was your favourite Christmas number one single?

And what did you buy – admit those monsters!!!

‘What Are We Gonna Get For ‘er Indoors’ by Dennis Waterman and George Cole – reached #21 in December 1983.

Face it – the British number ones at Christmas are a joke: Teletubbies in 1997; boy-bands, girl-bands, Cliff Richard, and charity records. At least in the 70s it was done in a tongue in cheek fashion!

But the Christmas number one can, sometimes, beat the hype; consider ‘Stan’ by Eminem – knocked off the top spot for Xmas 2000 by Bob the Builder (‘Can We Fix It’).

For me it has to be that awful old cliché – Slade with ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’: a timeless (almost!), out of tune, screamed classic!

The only one I bought was Band Aid on 84. I’ve long stopped giving a toss about the singles chart.

Hmmmmm…I think it’s a three horse race between The Darkness, Pap (sorry I mean Pop) Idol, and Gary Jules’ version of Mad World, from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Me, I already have Mad World on an album, sent Mr Ashley to HMV to get The Darkness yesterday, and think the Pop Idol CD would make a great drinks coaster…:p

The Darkness for No1! 🙂

You don’t think much of Ozzy and his daughters chances of retaining the top spot then? (Not that I’ve heard it – that I know of…)

Yes – notice I haven’t given an example…
But somebody has to admit to buying Mr Blobby! Noel Edmonds can’t have bought the lot, can he?
Huh! Do they know its Christmas time at all?;)
