This is a touchy subject and one which some people may see with a slight undertone of racism!
With BYC rife all around the world from its origins in the Arts has it had a negative or positive effect on your way of life or your friends??.
Personally i can’t stand the constant “Street” look and slang and it infuriates me madly having to see these rap star gangsters get anything from a flashy car, status and a big bosomed trophy girlfriend on each arm. I must add it doesn’t matter whether they are black or white or yellow or green its the hype that comes with it.
The pure B*llsh*t that results in incomprehensible grunting teenagers to its rambling rap songs just gets to me…..*cough*…..whinge i hear you cry
that’s my 2 cents worth!

Just a nice subculture to make people feel belonging somewhere. Like there always have been, and always will be. Some people think they are Balki Bartokomous, others think they’re Tupac. Whatever gives you confidence.
While i find a lot of today’s hiphop artists totally annoying, i think that’s mostly because i think it’s been lacking any real creativity over the last decade or so. Back in the 1980s rap/hiphop was still new and developing, and lots of creativity was involved both lyrically and musically. Nowadays, the bulk of it is just the same overproduced non-creative formula-filling crap as any other mainstream music: rip off the rhytm and one chord from a classic song, and add some “huh huh dem bitchaz huh huh”-lyrics. Thank you very much Puff Daddy for ruining hiphop.
But as long as there are still hiphop bands like Outkast around, all hope is not lost.

To be honest I don’t really know as most of the time I’m too busy to think about it and if I’m not at work I have other things on my mind

Ah, a thread where your opinion can get you in a WHOLE lot of trouble…let me DIVE right in…
Having been raised in Denver, a major city of 4 million, and having gone to school with all kinds of folks, I came to appreciate the humor and ways of black people and enjoy them more now than ever…I understand what Rap means to them, it is an art form (yes, ART) that is SUPPOSED to be abrasive to white folks (even though a lot of white folk are now picking up on it)…look what happened the last time black folks invented something of their own, Rhythym and blues music…white folks grabbed it up and tried to call it their own, or at least a bunch of white musicians started playing it and making TONS of money off of it while black artists got a mere pittance in comparison (folks like…oh, Elvis, the Stones, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn). So, rap music and the accoutriments that go with it are SUPPOSED to **** white folks off while still remaining a BLACK art form, because…and let’s face it…very few hip white folks can even ATTEMPT to do white rap effectively (with the exception of Eminem and the Beastie Boys). When they tire of that (or the white devils figure out how to make a buck off of rap on a regular basis, black folks will come up with something new and exclusively theirs…until we find a way to ‘whiten’ that also…
Just my own bling bling…

Much of what makes the US “cool” originates from black people. Rock music being the prime example, but also dance/disco type nightlife, the slangy manner in which people in the US speak, all originates from blacks. And yet blacks still dont yet fully (in my opinion) fit in with mainstream life in the US. So they have created a rap culture of their own. And now every teenager in the US feels they have imitate this or be part of it. I say that blacks shouldnt have to fully open their culture up just to entertain the curiosity of whites, if whites dont open up their lifestyle to blacks.
