LCY 25.3.08

Hi, I haven’t posted any pictures here for a while. Took a trip to LCY in the hope that the sun would come out and I would get some interesting weekday traffic. I got neither, but I hope you enjoy them anyway! 😀

Hi Paul, I’ve got it now:

http://www.jid.me.uk/workflow/Workflow2/sharp.html

Not sure what to make of it, I assumed that copying an experienced photographer would help me, but maybe I’m just jumping ahead of myself?

Oh and by the way, just saw your MAN pics on here, they are stunning Paul!

Thankyou very much, Dan! Very much appreciated. 🙂

The thing about tutorials is that they’re purely a guide. Jid Webb’s a very, very good and experienced photographer, but simply copying his methods for every photo won’t necessarily guarantee you good results. You have to approach every individual photograph as a unique image and edit each according to what it actually needs. Sometimes I need to apply a little more USM to a re-sized JPEG even though most of my sharpening is done in RAW. Sometimes they’re fine straight from RAW and don’t need to be touched.

Also, there are other ways to achieve similar results. In Jid’s larger workflow method, he mentions sharpening at 50% with a radius of 0.4, but if I’m editing a JPEG (that wasn’t originally shot in RAW) I generally prefer the look of 100% with a radius of 0.3. Both are correct and work well, it’s just that I have a preference for one over the other.

Jid’s guide is a very good one and you won’t find many better, but try playing with the settings he’s using. You might find changing a few values works better for you and it will give you a good unserstanding of how the smaller details of things like sharpening actually affect how your image looks.

Hope that helps, and thanks again for your kind words. 🙂

Paul

For these photos I had been copying a sharpening tutorial by Jid Webb.

I would link it to you but his site appears to be down. 🙁

Nice work, Dan! Good to see some shots from somewhere a little different.

Looking back at these shots, would you agree that I’m oversharpening them? I used to not sharpen enough but I fear I might be doing it too much now.

With regard to sharpening, it’s possible the radius you’re using may be a little too large for the size image you’re editing, leading to a few jaggies. What’s your usual sharpening technique?

Paul
