Directx v9 for Windows XP – Help!

Boffins listen up, if you have a moment.

I have directx v8 and am trying to get v9 downloaded – with no luck. It keeps on saying an internal error has occured. When I have a look at the log it says stuff like

“Install Engine is Invalid”

“CoCreateInstance on IID_IInstallEngine failed”

“GetDXVersion(): unable to get RC String from registry.”

etc etc. All gobbledegook I’m afraid – there’s 3 pages of the stuff. Can anyone help me please?

Then you can’t uninstall it… Simple.
Only solution: reinstall.

Thanks Frank. Directx does not come up under ‘Programs’. I know where it sits in the WINDOWS32 directory – How do I unistall without having the convinient ‘Uninstall’ option?

I cannot find directx8 in the Windowa uninstall options.

Thanks for all the replies. OK confession time. I was having real problems with IL2 and in exasperation agreed to download directx V8 which wiped over V9 (I did have V9 to start off with). DUH!

Yes Frank, I tried to download the XP version off their website and thay’s when the internal log error came up when it tried to install it. Sorry, What is the MSI Installer? I have the original XP disc – should I manually delete Direct X V8, find v9 off the XP disc and plonk it into my PC? How do I run an administrator account? (The computer is set up for 3 users, all with their own names). Sorry for the DUHs. [/B][/QUOTE]

Here the basic answers for “normal” cases:

Don’t even try to uninstall a DirectX version, or you are good to reinstall everything… And don’t trust their de-installation facility for DX !

MSI installer… I typed too quickly, this is only valid for versions prior xp (9x, Me, NT4, 2000) but for those who would need it, here the link : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4b6140f9-2d36-4977-8fa1-6f8a0f5dca8f&DisplayLang=en

Rule of thumb with Microsoft: never install a soft that is not meant for your OS version

Regarding the users, use the first account in the list, it should have the admin rights (the one that was created as first) (I guess you just have a list of users at the start. I prefer the good old user / password method “à la” NT4)

Now, to your problem:

You did the mistake to install a previous version of DX (You must know that they are backwards compatible, so, DX9 will support all DX8 can do). That probably messed up the system. In this case, try to uninstall it, you could not do worse.

Then, try to re download and reinstall the 9.

BUT, BEFORE ALL, BACKUP your data !!! Because I fear that in this case, only a good reinstall will solve it …

And no problem with the DUHs, Those are intelligent one… Daysover, i sometimes get some like “printer does not work”. Of course it does not, there is no paper… Or, “I have no network”… I go check, because by phone it is hopeless, and when you come at the luser’s desk, either the cable is not plugged in, or worse, he played with cables, and he did put it in the phoneplug ! ! !

Aaaaah, the happy stories of a sysadmin 🙂

Did a quick Google, there’s a guy had the same messages trying to install DX9a, he said he had to upgrade Office to get it to work
I would suggest doublechecking the pre-requisites to make sure you comply.

Only recent presses of the software will have the latest DX version. When XP was released initially it was bundled with DX8.

Its either that or only the XP sold with service pack 1 that has DX9 cos i know my version of XP came with DX8 and i had to download DX9… or i’m just going daft in my old age

Are you trying to download from the MS download site or downloading off a pc game? A pc game download might be easier.

Not so, my XP Home had DX8. I have just upgraded to 9.0b this week, everything worked first time. Sorry that doesn’t help directly, but all I did was follow the MS procedure and it did work. Can’t say I noticed much difference though! Are you sure you need it?

XP has DX9 from the start. I see they released a 9.0b version, but i’m not sure it is mandatory…

1) check you did download the Win XP version
2) update the MSI installer
3) run as administrator account
4) if any other problem, please report 😉
