What causes computers to crash?

This is probably a stupid question knowing how many computer buffs are on these forums, but my manuals contain very little information on such things so I need to find out somehow to avoid it happening to my own PC.
What are the most common causes of crashing?
Does the system restore facility completely restore evreything to normal?
I did not get one of those system recovery disks with my computer package and I am scared sh*tless of doing something that will cause the whole thing to go down.

Comet- System restore just remembers previous settings your computer had, its not some kind of second by second record of every funtion made by your computer. All this “go back in time” stuff is just MS marketing hype.

As a systems support person the most common causes of system
crashes tend to be the ‘BIU’ (Biological Interface Unit – the user!).

No seriously computers crash for all sorts of wierd and wonderful reasons, dodgy software, incompatible drivers, computer viruses,
power problems and old age of the system e.t.c.

The best way to help minimise the damage system crashes cause is to backup all your work on a regular basis. get a virus scanner installed. Use drivers provided by the manufacturer.
Think about power supply protection e.g. a ups.
Shut down software and the operating system correctly, wait for software to close.

The system restore feature, usually works by taking a ‘snapshot’ of your hard drive and storing it. When you restore, it copies the last snapshot you took, like a book mark. Im not sure if it restores everything, im guessing you would have to install the drivers again?

The recovery disk you got, I think they contain the operating system and system drivers and dont actually recovery anything (I may be wrong).

The best way is usually just to start from scratch and reinstall everything, but only if you got a backup of your work.
