How do I stop pop-ups?
They are driving me mad! I downloaded some software called mere surfing, but it doesn’t work.

Here´s a link to a free download:

I haven´t tested it myself and I´m sure there are other freeware.

I use Norton Internet Security, primarily for its firewall but it also has very effective Ad Blocking. It stops just about everything except some ads that are integrated in a webpage and those flashing thingies are just annoying (like some personalized stuff that can be seen on this forum), they don´t require any action from you to continue your browsing.
Other “popup stoppers” and “ad blockers” that I have used showed empty frames that accumulated in the lower bar but this far not a single one with NIS.

Yep .
Phantom is correct Ad-Aware is a very good tool , quite efficient.
I have also tried a freeware called adskill which is not bad.

You might also try and application called ad-aware. You can download it from the internet. It clears your computer of any spyware you inadvertently downloaded (programs like Kazaa are notoriously bad for putting spyware on your computer and spyware will create tons of pop-ups).
Lava Soft Ad-Aware is the name of the program. Just do a search for it.

First thing you have to know is that popups are a Java application, and you really cant stop them altogether. What Ive done is download the non-Java version of the Opera 7 browser which prevents popups from funtioning. The Mozilla browser has an option where you can suppress popups, but this only seems to work on webpages that you specify.

Try
Works for me. I just press Ctrl as well as Enter when surfing to prevent pop ups. I got mine free through www.download.com.
