The country is shocked. An ukranian Yak-42 carrying soldiers from kabul from the peace keeping force crashed in Trabzom (Turkey) when trying to land in thick fog. Accidents do happen…but what the hell are our soldier being taken in an ukranian rickety plane?. Of course accidents do happen. But when one refuels in a very conflictiv airport (surounded by mountains), without any navigation aids, with permament bad weather, and with a plane which doesn´t have no TCAS; GWPS and other and whose procedures seem to be risky….the accident is something expected. I wonder if the Spanish Air Force A310 couldn´t have taken them or an Iberia or other decent charte plane. I am really upset. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVERTED. Can I show today a bit of cheap and tacky patriotism in their memory?. 🙁

Keltic , your patriotism for your country is certainly not tacky – it is exactly the opposite , your patriotism for your country and your fellow countrymen is to be commended , it’s a sad fact that we can argue all we want on this forum but the one thing that unites us all at some point is death.
My condolences to all the families involved.

They took there time doing it, but the fact that they did do it is whats matters.

They have added a page about it under the “news” section. But it only mentions the dead crew and not the passengers.
Some of the photos are quite poor. Adds to the overall “dodginess” factor of the airline.
Leave accountants out of this though. Good ones don’t make false economies.

Im discusted that they haven’t mentioned the crash on their web page! Usually airlines do give out info if an aircraft from their fleet has been involved in a major incident! The only thing they have mentioned on their news page is how many passengers they carried last year.

“UM Air greets you. UM Air is on the third place among all airline operators in Ukraine!”
Ker-rist. THIRD?!?
Conclusive proof that the Spanish MoD are no different to ours.
“Listen in lads, there’s good news and bad news. Bad news is we’ve booked you onto the worst airline we could find. Good news is they were the lowest bidder, so at least the accountants are happy.”
Sheesh…

I suppose many people think that being a militar is a risk and having crashes in part of their risk, while civilians implies women, children….I don´t know, why some people think that. But life is life and specially when talking about a peace keeping force which risk their lives to bring hope to poor communities, either defusing mines, bringing food or medical supplies, or giving them their very best in moments of griefs like in Afganistan. Thanks for your support.

People in the military are no different to me or you. They are people too and deserve just as much respect.
R.I.P. 🙁

Keltic, don’t worry mate, your wish to mourn their passing is neither cheap nor tacky.
Somehow I always find it odd that the public find the loss of military lives somehow less newsworthy than those of civilians.
True, those of us who have signed on the line over the years have always done so in the knowledge that we are putting ourselves at more personal risk than Fred Bloggs who works stacking shelves in Tesco’s. But when a tragedy such as this occurs, the fact that the casualties are military personnel does not lessen the grief that their families feel. If anything, I feel there is a terrible irony that these people were killed while returning home FROM their duties.
My condolences to the families of all those killed.
