Archeological museum looted

Appart from the lost of lives, devastation and horrors of war the Bagdad Archeological Museum, which contains treasures from the biggest ancient civilizations of the area like the Assyrians, Caldeans, Babylonians has been looted yesterday, while the coalition forces were busy protecting the Ministery of Oil. Really sad for the culture of Mankind. 😡 I wonder about the fate of Babylonia, Ur and other main historical sites.

What do you expect from a nation without a culture or history? That it will protect archeological museums?? As long as the oil is safe 🙁 That’s all that matters.

Sorry, but I can’t believe you’re bemoaning the looting of a museum when the newly liberated are happily expressing their contempt for any type of society by looting and destroying hospitals. As to culture, do you really think the mobs currently marauding various liberated cities give a toss about culture?

I know they care a fig to preserve their own history and culture. Everything looted can be replaced, except lives and art. I have also heard that some incunable and ancient documents have been taken from the national library. I am not surprised about the looting, but the lack of protection by coalition forces to some places, and the protection of other than the airport, the Ministry of Oil, Saddam palaces………

Thanks Snapper. Visitng Petra is not out of the question, I’ve got relatives who’ve been there, but right now it would simply be too risky. Still, I’m very interested in Baalbek, from what I gather it’s got some of the most impressive Roman remains in the entire Middle East, and that’s saying quite a lot.

Kudos, Snapper. I’ve wanted to visit there for ages.

By the way, the passport angle is easy. I, ahem, “lost” my passport a few years ago, so I got a replacement. I now have two, so no worries over where I can and can’t visit.

Absolutely stunning. Had a couple of hours there before closing, was going to go back in the morning, then unfortunately had to bug out to Beirut and catch a flight home in a hurry – wife was rushed into hospital back at home. But if you really want to see somewhere mind-blowing, Petra in Jordan is the place. NOTHING I have ever seen compares, period. Baalbek is not stunning in as much as being a magnificent building, more in its ‘entirety’ – pretty much complete. All my pictures, other than a few ‘returns’ are up in the roof – i’ll go and dig some out tomorrow. For now though, heres the Monastery at Petra. There are a few more down here of Petra too – including rock formations. I was bored/fed-up with ruins by then, but Petra really was mind-blowing. Never known anywhere with so much impact. I’m not sure about the present situation, but is it not still possible for Israeli’s visit Jordan? Perhaps not desirable for ‘political’ reasons, but is the border still open? I realise Syria and Lebanon are out – I had to change my passport to get to them, as the Israeli stamp would have got me turned around at the border.

Snapper, please be so kind as to share your impression of Baalbek with us, I’ve heard it’s quite spectacular. Can’t hope to get myself there any time soon, got photos by any chance?

Hey, they are simply adapting their own cultural level and historical background to match with those of their liberators.

(This war better ends quickly, i’m getting waaaayyy too cynical here. But it’s so easy. Oh so easy. So incredibly easy…)
