DEFENSE DEPARTMENT BRIEFING FRIDAY
U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Richard Myers
• Rumsfeld: Prisoners of war must be treated properly.
• Myers: Iraqi Republican Guard has not gone on the offense yet — “they are dug in and dispersed.”
• Rumsfeld: Supplies from Syria pose a threat: “To the extent that military supplies or equipment or people are moving across the borders between Iraq and Syria, it vastly complicates our situation.”
• Myers: U.S. military strategy is “a brilliant plan” with “branches and sequels” for anything that might happen in the battlefield.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld issued a warning to Syria Friday, saying that coalition officials had information indicating that shipments of military equipment, including night vision goggles, were being moved into Iraq from Syria.
“These deliveries pose a direct threat to the lives of coalition forces. We consider such trafficking as hostile acts and will hold the Syrian government accountable for such shipments,” Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon briefing.
Rusmfeld also warned that armed supporters of Iran’s government entering Iraq would be considered enemy combatants if they interfere with U.S. forces there.
Also Friday, U.S. airstrikes on the Iraqi Republican Guard’s Medina division, south of Baghdad, have knocked out one-third of its force, U.S. officials said, and other divisions are now moving in from the west and north to reinforce it.

It seems that the US administration doesn´t have enough trouble with the bombs fell in markets in bagdad, with the casualities, and with the stalled war. It seems that Mr Perle and Wolfwich (is it correctly spelt), real psycos are giving future hints. As these guys have a real appetite for war, two more countries could be attacked. I suppose Syria can sell weapons whoever they feel like. I am really scared. Let´s hope the elections in 2004 will bring more decent and balance leaders in our world, at least is Spain.

I could understand Rumsfeld distress about it. But the US administration, has been trying to make this trying not to upset the arab world too much. So these words would be OK in other situation, but now doesn´t help. I have never understood why the Iranians are soo naughty for the US (appart from humilliating then in the seventies). They are integrist….less than Saudi Arabia, women are opressed less than Saudi Arabia where they can´t drive or work for instance, they are starting to see hints of slight democratic hints, not Saudia Arabia, don´t support international terrorism as much as Saudi Arabia. Let´t think that no Alqaeda in Iran, only regional terrorist support (Yihad, Hamas), not like Saudi Arabia. I don´t understand. Syria…..a country which is making huge effords in entering in the let´s say “civilized world”, with Assad son softening the regime and being cautious in many aspects……why should we get the fruit before being riped?….I understand North Korea in the axis and probably Iraq…..but these two countries?. Iran is eager to negociate with the US, wants to be regular country, why this stance?.

no no no….
i’ve seen the whole press conference on tv live…unless there’s some “cuts” i doubt it….Rumsfield said specifically that the violations are “not helpful”…when asked AGAIN by another reported basically if that’s a threat or not, he said it’s a carefully worded response of “not helpful”…so, i don’t think he went straight out and gave an explicit threat as some of you are suggesting. What do you expect him to say? Go ahead and supply them the equipments? What would your defense ministers say in the same situation?
By: mongu - 30th March 2003 at 00:16
The Wolfowitz plan all along was for a rolling campaign against the “axis” with Iran presumably next on the hit list.
In such an eventuality, Arab sentiment would be utterly anti-US anyway, so who cares if they are a little upset before hand?
I do agree that Syria and Russia have every right to sell to whom they will without US “permission” and inevitable anti-US sentiment will only rise more in Damascus (but who cares?) and Moscow (they bloody well should care!).

Vortex, you are right. But you must go a bit further. The US was aware of all the weapons being taken into Iraq. dozens of countries broke the embargo, and I am sure the US companies too. But why Rumsfeld attitude NOW. I find his statements not convenient right now. The US is trying to make this war look humanitarian, liberating…in the arab world. So which are his intentions in threating other countries at the moment?. I find it a really clumpsy move. Why don´t concentrate on the campaign?. Other countries have been warned. Why two who are in the so called axil of evil?. Appart from a simplistic denounce, which wasn´t found by change…..why with such a virulence?. What does he want to imply?. I am quite confused.

“what happened to the supreme rules of the “UN”?”
The US and UK have already said it is without credibility… who are we to tell them they are wrong.
Besides I believe the US supplied a few weapons to the Afghans when Soviet forces were there and the Soviets did much the same when the US was in Vietnam… back then it was about politics.. now it is good old fashioned capitalism… you should be pleased.
Heard a report on the BBC about Rumsfield warning Syria and Telling Iran to not aid those Nutters that choose to enter Iran to hide from US/UK/Kurd forces. The polite complaint to Moscow was criticised by the person they were interviewing at the time as US politics seems to be deal with the little guys with a big stick but put that stick away when talking to other big guys.
Night vision goggles will be very useful and of distinct importance in combat in builtup urban areas/sewer systems etc etc.

wow, truly amazing…
what happened to the supreme rules of the “UN”? uh…guys, under the UN sanctions, those are prohibited sales….so, when it suits you to criticize the US, “UN” is the supreme voice of the world…but, when some other countries violates it to “counter” the US, then all of the sudden….what resolution? Talk about another case of sick hypocrisy to fill your complexes.

not the most diplomatic thing Rumsfeld has ever done… specially with the feeling on the streets of the arab world already being as it is…
Wonder if Rumsfeld will denounce himself for selling weapons to Sadaam in the 80’s…

“Snapper. It is truly amazing just how much this site can save a person in counselling and therapy sometimes! Feel better now?!”
Yup. Cheers Jonesy. Far better.
By: keltic - 28th March 2003 at 21:37
Jonesy;
Weapons sales are happening everywhere. Democracies arm ditatoships, I suppose the free trade is not a question of morality, ditatorships sell to other ditatorships, and obviously in this case many countries have sold weapons to Iraq. Selling night googles is not something of special concerned. The US administration could warn Syria in private. But releasing this, right now, for nothing that serious, seems to me, looking for extra troubles. I think mr Rumsfeld has enought things to feel concerned about now, without picking up an unnecesary trouble with other arab countries. My concern is that this be used as an excuse for paving the way for further attacks to other arab countries. US administration reactions are different if coming from another big guys like Russia, that Syria. Mr Rumsfeld should relax, this gets out of his nerves, because things are not running according to schedule.

Snapper. It is truly amazing just how much this site can save a person in counselling and therapy sometimes! Feel better now?!:D
Keltic. Of course the Syrians can sell weapons to who ever they like but if you sell, or allow yourself to be involved in the sale, of weapons to one combattant in time of war you cannot expect to escape the extreme disfavour of the other combattant. What do you expect Rumsfeld to say:
“Oh yes, were so happy the Russians and Syrians got together to sell military kit to the Iraqi’s. It makes the fight so much fairer for everyone”.
Don’t think so.
I dislike Rumsfeld but expecting him to say much different than he did is unrealistic, anyway, I’d bet money on the fact that the message was primarily intended to be heard in a city about 1500 miles north of Damascus.
