Serb PM Zoran Djindjic assassinated
Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic was on Wednesday morning assassinated outside a government building in capital Belgrade. He was hit by two bullets.
A long time opposition leader, Djindjic had played a key role in toppling the regime of Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic.
This may have earned him the ire of Milosevic’s supporters.
Djindjic’s pro-West stance is also being cited as a possible reason for the attack.

“Serbs don`t worry me more than Croats or muslims living in Bosnia.”
We in Croatia would never kill our politician even if they are bad!
We change government on election not with gun. 😡

“This is yet more proof that the Serbs are an uncivilized and barbaric people who have no place in Europe. Their solution to everything is to kill someone…”
While the super civilised don’t have a solution to kill individuals… invade and make the whole damn country pay for the sins of a few…
I was wondering if you could give us a proper definition of civilised?
I doubt any culture or country could live up to any definition.

“I hope I am just being paranoid.” – Don’t worry Shelock, you are just being paranoid.

I am very worried right now, because I am afraid Djindjic’s replacement might be an ultra nationalist who will declare war on Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Kosova, Albania, Bulgaria, and who knows who else? The Serbs claim half of Croatia, all of Bosnia, Macedonia, Kosova, and with the rising nationalism in Serbia it would not surprise me if Serbia started a 5th war to occupy more land. Hundreds of thousands more could die. I hope I am just being paranoid.

To be fair, Djindjic wasn’t the squeaky clean, loveable character that the western media would have you beleive. He had lots of dealing with the criminal underworld, in Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and possibly further abroad. His rise to power was anything but democratic and he employed his own cronies in positions to increase his power. He did extravegantly shady deals with the US and other foreign powers which were more to his benefit than to Serbia’s. It is hardly surprising that he eventually trod on the wrong set of toes and got himself into a little trouble. The man had enemies in the army, in parliament, in “the mafia”, in the police etc etc.
Nonetheless, I don’t beleive he deserved to die and I certainly don’t think his assassination was a good thing. Not for him, his poor family (with whom our thoughts should be during this difficult time), nor for the nation.

Sad day..
Will this be a major setback for the Serbs and western relations. Could there be a resurgent nationalist movement?

Very sad for Serbia. His popularity seemed to be increasing.
Perhaps understandable given that there are still remnants of the old regime about with an axe to grind. Perhaps some criminal group unhappy with relative political stability abd hoping to find some advantage by introducing a little turmoil.
Maybe Ink would have some insight?
Anyway lets hope this news dosn’t get totally lost due to the Iraq issue. We all lose when this kind of thing gets shoved aside.
The last assasination of a head of state in Europe was in Sweden in 1986?
Regards
Sauron

I’m sorry to hear that about the Serb PM. My condolences.

oh no…
WWIII…must be….if Yugo is destabilized (i doubt it) France and Germany will find themselves cleaning up the mess and US will ask for UNSC resolutions which Russia will veto….talk about irony. US should’ve bring the issue to UN before…Americans are naive.

Serb and assassination in the same sentence sounds like Archduke and Ferdinand in the same sentence. Thats what I mean. Perhaps I should start using smileys.

Why do the Serbs worry you? I mean, there were 3 parties in a conflict, of which two were backed by NATO and one bombed by NATO. Serbs don`t worry me more than Croats or muslims living in Bosnia.

I always find it worrying when the words serb and assassination appear in the same paragraph.
