Really silly question

Okay, I gotta ask…this has been bugging me for a while…

Do the bits that hold the cement mix and turn round and round on the back of cement lorries revolve clockwise or anti-clockwise in the southern hemisphere ?.

ever since I followed a cement lorry down the motorway coming out of Limassol the other day, this really stupid question has been annoying me. I understand the water goes down the plug-hole in a different direction to that in Northern hemisphere and just wondered if it also affected cement lorries !

No, I havent been on the C*rlsb*rg and yes its probably THE MOST STUPID QUESTION ever asked on this forum, but hey…I need to know !

cheers

RE: Really silly question

The way the cement drum works is the same principle as the ‘Archimedes Screw’.

RE: Really silly question

For that answer, we need somebody from either Africa or South America – there isn’t much else in the Southern Hemisphere except NZ and a lot of islands, and NZ drives on the left, too.

RE: Really silly question

This may have something to do with our colonial cousins in the southern hemisphere driving on the same side of the road as we do in the UK

However which way do the cement trucks in those odd countries that drive on the wrong side of the road revolve, may be it’s got something to torque and oversteer?

RE: Really silly question

It won’t make a difference which hemisphere you’re in! The rotation of the cement drum depends on where you want the cement! There are strakes inside the cement drum which enable the cement to be extracted from the drum, these work on the same principle as a drill bit. So if the same convention is used for drill bits as it is for cement mixers, you turn it anti clockwise to mix the cement and to keep it in the drum, but then you turn it clockwise to get the cement out of the drum. I think that’s right… it works in my mind anyway… right going to get ready to go out… MMMMMMM C*rlsb*rg!!
