Madeira December 2007 – Very Large Post!

Hi All,

Last week I had a trip to Madeira with fellow photographer Tom Gautier (http://www.jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?userid=26708) and fellow photographer/forum member Adam Spalding. My main focus as far as photography is concerned was shooting things other than planes, although a reasonable amount of time was spent around the airport. The best spots appear to be quite backlit at this time of year, but there’s a superb viewing terrace at FNC and it gives the best opportunities for night photography I’ve ever seen.

Anyway, here are the shots. The traffic is very samey unfortunately, but what the hell!

Do they each get a seat?

Of course. We can’t have ants standing for the entire journey, can we? Their 6 poor little legs would get tired. Each ant gets its own seat, and each seat is equipped with a PTV measuring 3mm x 2mm (huge if you’re as small as an ant). Also, because ants are tiny tiny creatures, the inside of the FlyAnt cabin actually has 60 levels. First class for the posh ants in the top 15 levels, business class for the ants in suits on the next 15, and the remaining 30 are economy for the normal ants.

And from the outside it just looks like a normal B737!

On a serious note I’m actually quite surprised at the responses so far in this thread, so again, thankyou for taking the time to reply. Your comments really are appreciated.

WOW and i thought Ryanair were the kings of squeezing as many seats into a B737 as possible 🙂

Ha! Nicely done!

How many ants? Hmm… I’ll make a random guess at 107,477,351. I suppose it would depend on how big the ants were, though. 107,477,351 was just a random guess for the average sized ant. If the ants were really big you might only be able to fit 87,842,811. Small ants you might be able to fit more, like 132,690,162.

Hmm… I’m not even drunk and I still talk nonsense!

Outstanding Paul, For me the two fuselage shots (EZY/TAP) are beautiful. Your ability to get the most out of a photo is sheer genius.

Funchal certainly was a good laugh and the weather was very kind to us. Even out of season this airport certainly is unique.
All fantastic pictures mate, and going slightly off of aviation, your images from Funchal town are simply in a class of their own – I would advise everyone to get onto Paul’s FLICKR account and have a look at them.
Thank you once again for a fantastic trip.

Definately one of the most interesting and enjoyable sets of photos I have seen from you, Paul. So beautifully clear! The night shots have got to be my favourite.

Fly’ant’ is a strange one, though. Some prune will come up with flywasp or flyfly next….:p

I bet the ants have a great time on that 737, how many do you think it carries ?
😉

Wonderful shots Paul, love the night shots. If I were to buy a camera like yours how much would it cost me? got a link? 😉

Dean

Cheers, Dean!

I used a combination of equipment. The night shots were taken using a Canon 350D and the standard 18-55 kit lens, and the rest were taken on a Canon 30D using a Sigma 50-500 lens (very kindly lent to me by Dan Nicholson while mine is awaiting repair). Both the 350D and 30D can be found here:

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/photo/digicameras/canon.html

And the Sigma 50-500 here:

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/photo/lenses/Sigmalens.html#zoom

Obviously you don’t actually need the two DSLR bodies, you just swap lenses and to all intents and purposes the image quality of the 350D is the same as the 30D anyway. Also you could get perfectly acceptable shots using a lens other than the 50-500, like the Canon EF 75-300 f4-5.6 III USM. In short, you could get gear that would give you similar quality for a total of £544 instead of the £2000-odd I paid for my toys!

Hope that helps, and feel free to drop me a PM if you need any more info.

A great collection of inspiring photographs. Notice I said “photographs” as opposed to just shots or images.

Wonderful stuff! 🙂

wow!!!! if i could take shots like that, id be happy, do you use photoshop and shoot in raw????

jason

Thanks, Jason! Yes, I use CS3 and shoot all my aviation images in RAW. I find I can just get a little more at times shooting in RAW than I can JPEG. Plus, particularly with aviation images it’s easier to correct the many mistakes I make on the camera when I take the shot if I’m using RAW!

Thanks for your kind words so far, all.
