[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-01-03 AT 07:55 PM (GMT)]All this talk of cloning and DNA got me thinking about Jurassic Park and dinosaurs in general. I’ve always had an interest in this prehistoric creatures. I find them fascinating. My favorite one has to be Dilophosaurus. For those of you that don’t know what that is just think of the dinosaur that spit at the man in the movie Jurassic Park. Although in all actuality the real Dilophsaurus was quite different from its movie counterpart. The real Dilophsaurus wasn’t poisonous and didn’t spit venom as its prey. It also didn’t have the neck frills that you see in the movie. Also, the one in the movie was much too small. The real Dilohposaurus was around 20 feet long and stood around 10 feet high. It weighed roughly 1,000 pounds (half a ton/454-kg) or so. It’s distinguishing features included a pair of crests that ran along part of the top of the skull. When viewed from the front or rear these crests formed a type of V-shape. The mouth was lined with rows of razor sharp teeth and towards the front of the jaw there was a distinct kink, almost as if the jaw was designed to be used to catch small but quick prey. Each arm had a hand with three fingers each tipped with a sharp claw. There was a fourth digit on each hand but it was too small to be of any use. The feet were very similar, with three large claws on each foot and then two smaller digits with claws that most likely served no purpose. The body was long and slender, and the Dilophosaurus was likely quite fast. The animal lived around 200 million years ago during the early part of the Jurassic Period. The full name of the animal was Dilophosaurus witherilli. (The second name is part of the scientific name.) The word Dilohpsaurus stands for “Two-Ridged Lizard”. Here are some skeletons, paintings, and models of what Dilohposaurus probably looked like.

RE: Favorite Dinosaur?
Hand I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you have no idea what a Megalodon is?
Why is it some of you have to make very bad jokes about political figures.
This topic has nothing to do with politics so don’t bring them into it.

RE: Favorite Dinosaur?
Actually Geforce the Tyrannosaurus Rex is now recognized as much smarter than perviously thought. In fact many dinosaurs now are considered much more intelligent than before. Scientists have learned a great deal more about them in the past 15 years or so. For example, Tyrannosaurus is actually thought of as both a hunter and a scavenger, the same would apply to Dilophosaurus. While most dinosaurs weren’t exactly a brain-trust many of them were much smarter than we orginally game them credit for. Also, they were most likely warm-blooded animals, and definitely not the cold-blooded reptilian monsters we knew them to be as we grew up. I suppose that’s one of the many reasons I find them so fascinating.

RE: Favorite Dinosaur?
I have to agree with Kabir. The Triceratops is nice, a good combination of stings and a silly sluggish look.

Favourite Dinosaur?
Has to be Saddam Hussein, and soon to be extinct.

RE: Favorite Dinosaur?
Kabir that’s a nice choice there. I always thought the Triceratops was a rather neat dinosaur. Personally if I was a big predator (Tyrannosaur, Albertosaur, etc.) I’d never even think of attacking something with those kinds of defenses.
So we have: T-Rex : 1
Dilo: 1
Trike: 1
Boy, I feel pretty stupid putting in all that info about Dilophosaurus when this topic seems to have gotten very little interest. Oh well. Thanks to those who have posted.

RE: Favorite Dinosaur?
The fact that Geforce, of all people, is the only one who has posted on this thread is a bit disturbing. Though Geforce in all actuality, I’m grateful you posted because I really want to know if people are interested in this topic. It’s so fascinating to me.
And by the way….is Biff still around these boards? I don’t remember seeing him post for quite a while.
Scores: Tyrannosaurus Rex – 1
Dilohposaurus – 1
