Downloading Music

Has anyone had a go at downloading music from the web, mp3’s etc?

I’d basically like to know a little about how it all works. I’d like to download a few of my fav songs and write them on to a CD.
Is this possible? What software / hardware do I need? How much is it going to cost?
Also any good websites I should visit?

I’m not usually so backward on things like this but I’ve taken no interest in the subject until now, so any info is appreciated.

RE: Downloading Music

I must say I am a bit lazy with downloading stuff, and if I like the band or even a few songs I will buy a CD, I have no problems with burning copies for my mates however because I have a long memory.
when CDs first came out they were about $32 here. We were told this was because the technology was new and expensive. The price hasn’t come down and now CD technology is probably cheaper than tape, yet the price hasn’t gone down. Someone is getting a much bigger cut than they were getting ten years ago and probably getting very rich.
I do tend to buy the CDs I like rather than rip them from a mate, much the same as if I borrow a game and like it it usually get around to buying it.

Oh, BTW I am currently listening to Fuel, Train, though right now I am trying to find a copy of “99 red balloons” by Goldfinger… loved the first version, but these guys sing bits in English so I can understand what the song is about and they’ve rocked it up… having trouble finding it at the local music stores as it isn’t that new.

RE: Downloading Music

the economist in me say its the duty of the company to protect its monoply be all methods – so its up to the companies to stop people doing this. also in economics i would say people are doing this becasue its is cheaper than getting the CD – indicating th eprice of CD’s is too high.

obvisouly there are people out there prepared to buy cd-r’s and wait several hours to downlaod tracks (esp on 56k lines like me) than buy albums.

i actually have ripped all the good tracks off my cd collection and put them on my hard drive for easier aceibility. i then have downlaoded a few MP3’s of my real favioutes tracks.

but really I blame the record industry is going to have to lump it – the real atrists out there will still make record in their garages or bed rooms, and go out and do small venues – its just the super life style will go. the Pop music however really will suffer IMHO (oh dear what a shame 😀 }> 😀 )

Don’t want to “take over” this thread but what do you guys think of downloading music… I mean from moral and legal perspectives?

RE: Downloading Music

I used Kazaa for the downloading, and RealOne player for the burning.

RE: Downloading Music

Forget the law – there can’t be a 24 hour limit on downloads.

Recording your favourite song off of the radio and putting it onto cassette is illegal. Using one piece of software on more than once machine is illegal. Taking drugs is illegal (well, some), but people still do it all.

I myself frequently download and burn music to audio CD. I use Limewire to download it and MP3 CD Doctor to burn to CD – it so much simpler than Nero and gets the job done quickly and easily.

You can download MP3 CD Doctor for free from http://www.download.com/ whereas Nero (which I do have) is shareware?

RE: Downloading Music

Downloading MP3s and not deleting them after 24 hours I think is illegal and then burning them to a disk is very illegal but I’m not sure if that bothers you or not?!?!

Luke

RE: Downloading Music

For downloading I use KaZaA, for burning Nero and LG 32/10/40X CD-R/RW.
