Any computer guru's here?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-01-03 AT 10:58 PM (GMT)]I have just been given a piece of software that runs fine on a friends computer. Their PC is a modern one running XP as is mine. The software is a training package that consists of graphics and audio files that take you through the various sections. There appears to be some sort of viewer that opens up fine and allows you to chose from various sections. The viewer runs from the hard drive while the other info is on CD-ROM. When you select a section the following message appears in a box with an ok button underneath it.

SQL STATE: S1C00
NATIVE: 106
MESSAGE: (MICROSOFT) (ODBC MICROSOFT ACCESS DRIVER) OPTIONAL FEATURE NOT IMPLEMENTED

When you click ok the following message appears with an ok button under it.

SQL STATE: S1010
NATIVE: 0
MESSAGE: (MICROSOFT) (ODBC DEVICE MANAGER) FUNCTION SEQUENCE ERROR

If you click ok the same message appears again.

I have run the program reasonably successfully on my other PC (a laptop) which is running Windows 98. The problem I have with running this from the laptop is that it requires a higher resolution than my laptop can give (laptop best is 800 x 600) so I can’t see the whole picture!

Some research on the SQL STATE code implies that the SQL installed in my modern XP machine cannot communicate with the older database of the program.
Can I and should I try to downgrade my SQL to an older version (from 2000 to version 7 perhaps)?

🙂

I hate database compatibility stuff. I have a situation like that at work with an older database running on a newer computer. But at least you have hope in that someone else is using the same operating system as you are so all is not lost.

Contact the software vendor (the training software) directly. I am sure they have seen this problem before and know what a quick fix is. Rather then hunt and peck for an answer by digging through config files and such.

They may ask you to do the following (which you may already know how to do…)

I have WinXP pro so this may or may not help….. In WinXP Go to “Start” / “Control Panel” / “Administrative Tools” / “Data Sources – ODBC Tools” hit that a dialog box will appear that has a bunch of “tabs” at the top to choose from. Select “Drivers” and look at this list. Make sure it matchs what is on your friends system upon which this software you want to use works. (version number and date of driver) This is a start. I will look in my XP reference book and see if I can find anything. If I can’t, Frank will answer ALL your computer questions 🙂 There are some other pretty saavy computer types who lurk on this board that are better at database stuff than I am.

RE: Any computer guru’s here?

Hmm, not sure you should do that, anyway, there is usually a backwards compaibility.

Have a look at your ODBC sources, just to check if anything isn’t missing.

On Win98: Control Panel -> ODBC 32 (I think – I write it from memory)
On WinXP, Control Panel -> Data Sources (ODBC)
