Something distressing. For non British citizens, Brighton, the lovely and decadent Victorian city in the South of the UK, is the Pavillion, the Lanes and the Victorian Pier. Well, shame on the local authorities for letting the pier to fall down. Brighton won´t be the same. There´s still one in Portsmouth (well, excuse me people from Portsmouth…in fact in Southsea) and I think in Blackpool. Anyone knows if it will be rebuilt again?.

BTW for thoses that don’t know brighton is like the uk version of san francico
there are two piers – one at the end of the main road from londona nd one down the seafront a bit and this second oe is the one thats fallign down.
only part of its fallen down but apparently structual enginers knew since november that it was getting very dangerous – 30% of the suports are broken !!!
IMHO sure fix and waste some lotter cash (its better than filling the dome with crap)

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down
The Lottery money was granted to ‘The west Pier Trust’ 4 years ago, But it is a private company that wants to develope the site. Aledgedly they want to develope the sea front end more than the pier which would ruin the views, plus as quoted in the local paper its not a restoration of the old pier but a re-build.
The end result could be that the pier will be demolished anyway and the private firm just developes the seafront for themselves.(Call me a cynic but this maybe what they’re after)
The reasons given for the hold up in starting work is that the orginization which runs the Palace pier went to the European court saying that the £14.2 million lottery money was for a commercial venture and said it was ‘unfair competition’.tThe ruling went against them but they are taking it to appeal, question is how much of the pier will be left at the end of that.
The same company hold some land outside of Brighton which was ment too be re-developed into Hi-tech business units, but they’ve done nothing to it and its just an eyesore (can you see a pattern here!!)

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down
Living in Brighton as I do , I went and had a look at the West Pier yesterday and normally I’m all for preserving our heritage but I think its throwing good money after bad. They have all ready spent
£1.5 million on preventing it from falling into the sea and the result is that the bridge link they erected to the end is now in the water.Overall its now an eyesore.Work was due to start this spring at the cost of £30 million approx, now with this set back how much extra will it be?
I think it would be better to replace it with a modern pier, purpose built, maybe designed by Sir Norman Foster (yes I know he did the wobblie bridge!) It would mark the new Millenium, and probable work out cheaper.
The planners were going to build some sort of modern veiwing gallery which would be out of place anyway.
As far as lottery funding goes what is the future of the pier?
I believe its for private enterprise casino etc;so surely the some argument stands as was suggested with one of the objections for the Vulcan because its in private ownership.

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down
Yes, lottery money would be nice but that would just bring up the old nugget about what constitutes a good cause. Personally, I would say no, this does not constitute a good enough cause. The pier has been allowed to deteriorate over many years. The kindest thing would be to demolish it and remove what now is nothing more than an eyesore. There are other piers which have managed to be maintained over the years so I don’t see why people should be expected to contribute towards something which nobody has cared for for many years.

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down
A bit of Lottery money wouldn’t go amiss here. Too much money is given away to winners of the lottery, most of which could not spend their winnings. A mere £30million will be just a tiny dent in Camelot’s pocket.

I swear I heard on the news the other day, that it would be an estimated £30million to repair, and restore it!

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down
Hi Keltic,
According to some reports,a section of Brighton pier has collapsed, not the whole thing, although it’s all looking a bit creaky. There is a band of enthusiasts who do thier best to look after things, and they have vowed to raise the cash to get the pier sorted, even restoring and rebuilding the bits that recently fell in.I certainly hope they do.Sounds like a sound case for a lottery grant application if you ask me.Whatever they decide to do,it won’t be cheap!

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down
Yes it is a shame to let a pier that was once meant to be very popular, go to waste, but Brighton still has the Palace pier.
