Just wondering …

As I was studying modern history, I came across a very weird question. During the 15-18th century it happened frequenlty that monarchs from different countries married their children with the children of the enemy to avoid a war, or like the Habsburgers, to expand their territories.

My question: would that still be possible today, I mean legally. For instance, what if the King of Belgium and the Queen of the Netherlands would get married, would our countries be united once again? (We already made that mistake in 1814 }>, and I think both parties would prefer to stay independent :7). In Belgium and Holland, King/Queen are still head of the state, and constitutionally, they still have the legal power to form gov’ts, declare war etc.

Can anyone answer this question?

RE: Just wondering …

Its already been done Ben. Your king of Belgium is the nephew (or uncle) of Queen Victoria of England. Hes also from the German royal family of uhhh Salsburg? or something. It should be noted that the British royal family have strong ties with the German royal familys and often attend royal receptions in Germany. It should also be noted that intermarrying with other royal familys can benefit but also can damage as was the case when Isabel and Ferdinand of Spain married there kids into other royal familys of europe only to have most there kids die and have there grandson Carlos V take the thrown who was raised in the netherlands and treat Spain as merely a funds/army provider for his other Hapsburg interests in Europe.

Ben- Ill email you after new year and catch up with you, Im kind of tied up now.
