Whats the most inane conversation you have ever had to endure? Being told about Oil trucks, (and how lovely they are) starts the ball rolling for me…

Deregulation and privatisation is what its called, there must be a lot of different bus companies covering the same area, you’ll find that they frequently update their timetables and review their fares in order to compete with rival companies for what passengers are left standing, straight away that puts pressure on the drivers to get to the next stop before any other bus. Unfortunately its a very “cowboy” way to run a transport company, something that , thank God, doesnt happen in London.
The order of the day down here is to sit behind the bus in front and let him do all the work, much safer.lol
the jibe about anoraks was taken in the spirit in which it was meant.
Dave 🙂

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
Never joke about anoraks. And the golden rule is don’t say anorak 3 times or one will appear armed with note pad, leaky biro, Thermo flask, and binoculars..I’ve only said the ‘A’ word twice so I think I got away with it!:+

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
Hi, Dave.
I can’t speak about bus drivers in London but round here they are a law unto themselves. The distance between each stop is apparently best travelled by getting the bus to go as quickly as possible and getting it to stop the same way. Flashing of lights and blaring horns is mandatory. Communication between driver and passengers varies from the mono-syllabic to the downright abusive! Example: ‘Does this bus go to Willenhall?’ ‘Grrrnnnppphhh’, or ‘Hurry up you dozy old bag.’
As for the bit about anoraks, I was only joking, wasn’t I?

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-12-02 AT 05:50 PM (GMT)]oooooh!!!!Kev! that was below the belt(the bit about anoraks)
so thats what you think of bus drivers is it ? I dunno about your part of the world but down here there is a code of practice, London Transport garages(or TFL as its now called) although not as regimental as they used to be, expect their drivers to behave correctly on the road.We can be sued for negligence as easy as the next person , more so in fact. Yes, even driving thru puddles and soaking people carrys a discipline with it (providing the innocent party complains)
And as for pulling away when someone is running for the bus! once the bus is moving I’m checking my mirrors and the road ahead, not looking at the pavement for runners, its dangerous to stop a bus suddenly once youve pulled away from the kerb. Besides my last action before pulling away is to check nearside mirrors for anyone who might be running. Unfortunately we dont always see them
And driving thru’ puddles deliberately? when its raining its sometimes difficult to see a puddle, and when we do its normally to late to avoid it, not a good idea to swerve suddenly in a 11 ton bus
And as for slamming the brakes on when theres people waiting to get off,is stupid and dangerous. There was an incident involving one of our drivers a few weeks ago, where some kids kept ringing the bell for fun, yea I know its annoying but there was no excuse for his actions, he slammed the brakes on which resulted in six people being taken to hospital, two of them were detained for a few days and the driver himself being sacked for gross misconduct.
Driving a bus in London may not an easy job, but its a responsible one,and sometimes very stressful, but once I finish work I dont wanna discuss it over a pint.

Dave.
“Kev
I understand what you’re saying .”
Oh no you don’t!!! Oooops! Slipped into pantomime mode again there for a moment.
“You could be right about work colleagues having a humdrum life outside work, but to think of bus driving as an exciting vocation, now that has got to be sad.”
C’mon, driving through puddles to soak people, encouraging someone to run for the bus and then pulling away just as you get to the spot, waiting till there’s three or four people standing to get off and slamming the brakes on? Some, note some, bus drivers seem to have a whale of a time.
“The Royle Family? the mickey take that we all fell for? no, you did, I didnt, the only good thing about that programme was the theme tune.”
Wrong. I think it’s amazing how well it did. Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash must have laughed all the way to the bank. Ricky Tomlinson probably ‘never did so little for so much.’ I didn’t like the programme, I’m just amazed at the money and enthusiasm it generated.
“Hey, did you know that theres a book for Eddie Stobart spotters its about 15cm x 10cm and has approximately 50 pages,(yawn) each page is white with black writing and theres some really lovely pictures(yawn)of some lorries and stuff and it sits on the shelf just nicely, and……………..asleep yet??”
Yes Dave, I’ve heard of it. Isn’t there something else along the same lines called Civil Aircraft Markings and JP World Airline Fleets? Don’t know how true it is, but had heard they were sold with a free anorak?

I understand what you’re saying .
If septegenarians have had a life then let me hear about it, not their everyday whinging. There are some extremely interesting older people out there, in fact the most interesting man I ever met was a former mayor of our humble town, he was in his 90s at the time and lived to be 101, a great guy.
Why do we brits love to talk about the weather whatever age we are?
“Its cold today” says one old lady, “Yes isnt it” said the other one, “I had to put an extra wooly on today” and so it goes on,
You could be right about work colleagues having a humdrum life outside work, but to think of bus driving as an exciting vocation, now that has got to be sad.

Right, thats that off my chest!!
I need a drink………..wheres the scotch?

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
Sparky,
I agree with you about the vocal cords but please don’t misunderstand about the bobble hats, it’s nothing to do with keeping warm, it’s just so they know which end of the ground to stand in.

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
I can under stand why they need the scarves around their vocal cords because it takes a lot of skill and consentration to reduce your favorite teams name down to a couple of retarded grunts. but the bobble hat…..brains….warm no now your going to far.

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
You have to feel sorry for the younger generation only having blue and pink to talk about in our day (old fartspeak!) we had rainbow with bungle, zippy and george.
What i find to be the most annoying. Is when someone accusses me of being an anorak planespotter (when I’ve never written a plane number down in my life and never likely to) just because I’m interested in aviation, tells me football is much more interesting then bores the a*s* off me telling my who score what against whom in what minute what cup and what year.. who’s the anorak?

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
stupidest conversation ever???
somebody asking when the new years party was going to take place…
apart from that, some old housemates, after smoking some o’ the good stuff….
talking about the universe and the planets and how the sun is really just an extension of our minds, and that we are all connected……
as you can see, made stephen hawkings quiver in his wheel chair (honest joke)

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
Dave,
You’re obviously missing the point with some of these conversations.
“listening to teenaged girls talking,”
I stood in a queue listening to some girls discussing blue in great detail without making any sense. One even wanted to marry blue? I put it down to my addled brain and poor hearing till I found out blue was a pop group. It’s not only girls, recently I heard a group of lads discussing pink in intimate detail…..
“or septagenarians discussing their latest outing to see their GP,”
Generally, septuagenarians are approaching the end of their days and have often lived interesting and varied lives. With the NHS as it is today, a visit to the GP could be the last great adventure.
“or that bloody awful “comedy” the Royle Family,.”
You’ve got to admire the gullibility of the British viewing public. Millions of people watching a programme on tv about a family watching tv. Got to be the biggest mickey take ever and we fell for it.
“or guys at work talking shop when you go for a drink with em,”
A perfect example of people’s infatuation with work. Maybe it’s because their real lives are so humdrum or that their job is so fascinating to them.
“or my next door neighbour telling me about her operation,”
It’s the current most significant event in her life.
“or pensioners talking about the weather.”
It’s the current most significant event in their lives….
“people, people, people, GET A BLOODY LIFE!!!!!”
In the cases of the septuagenarians, they’ve already had one!

kev35

Anything Billy Hansford can come up with. Why on earth does he harrass me like that? Every conversation (or monologue) is the most insufferable.

RE: Whats the most stupid thing?
Sitting in the meal room at work, listening to my female staff discuss everything from babies to babies, not forgetting babies.
I’m in my 50’s, my youngest son is 19. I have absolutely no wish to talk about bloody babies!!!!!
Booooorrrrrrrinnnnnnggggggg!!!
