Hi folks,
I’m not one who believes in UFOs,aliens etc,but I saw a strange thing in the sky a couple of nights ago and I’m hoping someone can tell me what it was.
It appeared to be a star but as I looked at it I noticed it appeared to change colour extremely rapidly, from green to pink to blue to almost white. The colours alternated extremely quickly, there was almost no time to register one colour before it turned to the next. At first I thought it was a high flying aircraft with alot of strobes on the go,but I watched for a good 5 minutes, even with binoculars, and it didn’t move at all.It wasn’t a distinct shape,it just appeared to be a tiny ball of flashing light. There was also a second one some distance away, which displayed all the same characteristics.
Before you ask,no I hadn’t been drinking, and no I don’t take drugs.I’m sure there’s a perfectly good explaination for it and I’m just curious to know what it was.Any astronomers amongst us?

RE: UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object)
I think you’ve sighted a star, whose light is being diffracted different colours in the atmosphere. I’m afraid all sightings which are explained by common misidenitfication form about 85% of all UF sightings.
Two years ago,at night in July, I saw a very bright purple luminous sphere hovering in a stationary position at an altitude of less than 1500 feet, in very close proximity (less than 1/4mile) to Woodford Aerodrome, in Cheshire.
The same object was apparently sighted by more than 100 people, and it got in the Manchester Evening News.
The sphere stayed stationary for about 20 seconds, before changing bright orange, then purple again, and shrinking very quickly to a tiny sphere which then dissapeared.
Within seconds, myself and oeone of the people I with sightied a second luminous sphere on the near horizon, shining bright orange which dissapeared over the vicinity of Lime Park, Cheshire about 8 seconds later.
I also have another serious UFO sighting from childhood, but I also have about 20 sightings which I later found out were something else, so don’t worry too much about mis-sightings.
When I was 11 years old, driving home with my parents from Bradford, I saw a circle of yellow lights hovering at an altitude of about 150-200 feet over a small school in Bramhall, Cheshire called Nevil Road Primary School.
This is the only one of the two sightings that I consider seeing an actual vehicle, as the first sighting of light spheres may have been unknown atmospheric phenomenon.
Twi.

RE: UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object)
all stars do it if you look closely enough (all the light must come through the atmosphere!)

RE: UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object)
Thanks guys, either the light refraction or the Venus explaination would make sense, although I’m inclined to think it’s the light refraction as there was another one not too far away doing exactly the same thing.
Thanks again…:)

RE: UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-12-02 AT 07:28Â PM (GMT)]It was not necessarily a star,
Jupiter , Mars or Venus is on view this time of year.
but I’m pretty sure its Venus.
(I think the word you’re looking for Gary is refract}

RE: UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object)
If it wasn’t moving, then what you witnessed was as has been mentioned before, a star.
The light (coincidentally travelling at the speed of light but slowing down gradually as it hits the Earth’s atmosphere) was being defracted by all the dust in our atmosphere thus giving the impression of changing colour rapidly.
I think.
Cheers

RE: UFO (Unidentified Flashing Object)
I think that its starlight being split into the colours of the rainbow..by the atmosphere….defraction.
