What is the meaning of life?

I saw this on Saab’s thread the other day and it got me to thinking. What brings meaning to YOUR life?

RE: What is the meaning of life?

Still can’t see it. Propagating further life may GIVE meaning or purpose to our lives, but is not THE meaning or purpose of life. Life just is. You may as well ask what is the meaning of the life of an amoeba? plankton? Gareeth Gates?

I should never have migrated from the Flypast section!

Or spilt a glass of Pepsi on my keyboard at work – the keys are all sticking and I have to correct every damn word!

RE: What is the meaning of life?

Thats remembrance of death – not meaniing of life. Did Johnny’s death actually achieve anything? He didn’t even see it coming – 2 Fw190’s loomed up from the channel and downed him and Babe Haddon. Is the meaning of life to be caught from behind? Or to remember someone who went before you? Surely if there is a meaning to life it relates to the present and future prospects of the life of oneself – not the past life of oneself or others. I don’t think that my life is worthy of anything to anyone except in giving life to my daughter and in merely existing (as is hers) Sure, my life impacts on people all over the place in many ways – friends, family, customers, and more in a wider sense, but what meaning? To what purpose is my, or any other life? I see no ‘why’ I see merely ‘is’.

We exist, pure and simple – Clerics dictate that we live to serve God, the governmeent dictates that we live to serve them, wife dictates the same. Is the meaning of life to serve? Or is the meaning of life to be a part of a (therefore pointless) food chain and cycle of life?

I have no regres, as I have fulfilled most of my ambitions (and am still under 30) and am happy in my life. I just don’t see that it has any meaning on a wider scale.

Snapper.

Look at what you are doing with your study of 609 and in particular your campaign for a memorial to Johnny Wiseman. What can be more meaningful, to you or Johnny, than that?

RE: What is the meaning of life?

There’s always someone better of than you.

‘If’ is the middle word in life. (Apocalypse Now)

Why must life have any meaning? Why do we presume that we are important enough to have any meaning? Is the world any the richer for your existence?

If it is, then you may have found A meaning of life. Me? I stopped worrying about that a long time ago. Then I worked out that the chicken came before the egg.

Well, there always IS someone worse off than you – in the same way that there is alwways someone better, or taller, or richer, or brigthter than you. I don’t think someone else suffering helps me, but the thought that things could be worse definitely does help, if only to encourage me to pull my socks up and sort myself out.

Yeah, sorry mate, bad choice of words on my part.

Bringing a baby into the world is definately an emotional experience, not that I’ve actually delivered one , but I have two kids and been there at their births, there’s no other feeling like it.

RE: What is the meaning of life?

Dave,

I think there are many things that bring meaning to my life. Friends, family, anything that brings you fulfilment. Love, be it romantic love or the love of a friend or family member. My work was immensely satisfying and there were occasions during that time when I know I made a real difference to someone’s life, or conversely, their death. I have had the privelege of assisting in the delivery of a child, I have taken part in resuscitations, some successful, some sadly not. I have helped to ease the suffering of a grief stricken family and been people’s only companion as they died. I have worked to the limit of my emotional endurance. My experiences have brought meaning to my life.

“Remember, there’s always some one worse off than you are.”

I’ve always had a problem with that statement. I know it’s probably just me but I’ve always thought what kind of person would that make me if I can derive some feeling of comfort or satisfaction in knowing that other people are worse off than me?

You’re so right, I’ve been in the position where I’ve had plenty of money and possessions, all it did was to attract arrogant , aggressive, pretentious people and it was making me the same,it also drops you in that “keeping up with the Jones” syndrom, looking back I dont think I was very happy.
These days I live a bit more modestly, I dont have very many ambitions left to achieve. Some might say I live a very mundane life, and there’s others that might think I live a very exciting life. Their opinions dont bother me.

Remember, there’s always some one worse off than you are.

Why do we have to put a meaning to life? perhaps you’re right, perhaps we do need a meaning to cope with our mortality.

The one thing that separates us from animals and plants, is our ability to think, therefore making our lives more complicated than it has to be.

RE: What is the meaning of life?

To bring meaning into it.

I don’t mean it as a catch-phrase, but if we stop asking this question, stop struggling with the implications, then we become adrift. It’s interesting that humans want to assign some meaning to life, a plant does not, an insect does not. Perhaps it is how humans cope with mortality.

I took some classes in Iaijutsu, and the question posed to me was, what if you were to die in ten minutes, how do you prepare yourself? What if you had a day, a week, 50 years? You must find what gives meaning to YOUR life, pursue that you need, enjoy that you have. Hopefully you’ll also take care to bring meaning to those around you.

RE: What is the meaning of life?

The answer to the question depends upon how one defines “life”

RE: What is the meaning of life?

The meaning of life, or what brings meaning to our lives??

I’ve already posted elsewhere on this forum my interpetation of the the meaning of life, with the help of the Oxford English dictionary.

What brings meaning to my life?

My wife,
My kids,
My health,
My hobbies,
My sense of humour.

Live each day to the full, no matter what your circumstances,
If you cant do anyone a good turn then dont do them a bad one,
laugh a lot ,be happy, see the good in everything

RE: What is the meaning of life?

Depends if one belives in God or not. For me, being a moderate catholic is a step to other life and a way earn eternity. But it doesn´t mean that I don´t have my doubts and questions about this issue.
