I need to buy a ring soon and I don’t know what to go for. My Mum is very taken with a fairly rare stone called Tanzanium (from Tanzanian mines) which is a blue-ish colour aparently.
So I guess the choice is…
Tanzanium
Ruby
Emerald
Diamond
Or possibly a good stone surrounded by small diamonds
I’m just no good when it comes to these things – any ideas or comments?

RE: Stones for engagement rings
You need to read a book called “The illusion of diamonds” by Epstein. The value of diamonds is artificially set by the DeBeers company of south africa/namibia. If your a sucker, youll pay these artificial prices. I am familiar with emeralds, if you want to make a really good deal, youll go to colombia where you can buy them for a fraction of the market price. Remember the two important points to look for is clarity, any sparkeling in the stone is caused by imperfections and is to be avoided. And the darker the green the more valueable the stone. And of course this factors in with the size/weight of the stone.

You mean like Homer Simpson, when he gave an onion ring to Marge?
I see the point about not being materialistic about it all, but I really think this is one instance where I’ve just got to hand over my credit card and accept whatever the “right” ring costs.
My inclination is diamond/gold, but it would be nice to do something a little differently thats all.

RE: Stones for engagement rings
I used to work with a guy who bought the most expensive engagement ring you could imagine… It cost around 50p and was made by plaiting two strands of string in the colours of their birth stones. He told her it symbolised the intertwining of their lives and he left a loose strand about four inches long which he said represented their future. He did this in front of a big crowd at someone’s retirement party. Linda really seemed overwhelmed and instantly agreed to marry him. He then gave her a jewellery box which contained a car key. He’d spent the money he would have used on a ring on a car which was what was really needed.
Strange to say, they have now been married for twenty one years, have one child at University and another who leaves school next year. Every five years he makes her another ring out of string and she still drives the same car….

If both of you are really in loved-and plans to get married soon-than there’s no price tag for it.Buy the ones which you could afford and be sincere.

I think that would be hard seeing as the crown jewls are under tight security

RE: Stones for engagement rings
Well, a friend of a client is a diamond merchant in London. So I’m flying down next weekend to see what he’s got. I thought it might be nice for me to buy her a stone, and for us to get it mounted on a ring together, so she could choose the type of ring – gold, planimum etc..
Come on, some of you must be married – what have you done? All my friends just say get her birthstone or a big diamond!

RE: Stones for engagement rings
cheapest is best…yea that will only apply to the person buying it. I think the stone that flips girls most is Diamond…then again i could be wrong.
