Gents,
Over the last few weeks, some of you have started using the HTML marquee tag in an attempt to brighten up your autograph with one or more nicely scrolling pictures.
I humbly ask you to stop this. It annoys the hell out of me, to the point that i stopped reading the Cyprus S300-thread on AFM because my poor eyes were drawn away continuously by a pic of a missile launch moving in an unnatural way.
Or, to make myself clear who prefer fancy looks over textual content:

Well it was going to happen sooner or later, I’ve been talking with the WM about the problems the board is having atm and one of the conclusions was the scrolling sigs, these keep a post open even when the user is not on line, thus allowing a hacker access to our little board. Sorta like going on a two week holiday and leaving the front door wide open.
Thnks guys for closing the doors, but the damage is done, now we have to kind a good bug killer.

Y’know, them moving image things make the damn page load slower on my Mk.1 POS modem. Don’t really care either way though, its gonna be slower than crap anyway }>

Hmmm, I suppose as phounder of the “Old Pharts”, I should put in me two bob’s worth.
I admit that my messages are plain and boring in their presentation. I prefer to rely on their content to draw the reader and promote response. I might decorate my messages subtly when I learn how to, but us Old Pharts find it difficult to readily adjust to hi-tech stuff.
I don’t have a problem with the manner of presentation of the messages from guys like Saab, A330etc, T5 et al. It does add colour to the forum and is a bit different from pages of endless text. I just think it has to be balanced with content. Don’t try to dazzle the rest of us by outdoing each other in your quests to have the biggest and the best – some of us are too old to be impressed by that stuff. Present your messages in whatever form you wish, but remember that, for a message to be effective, it has to be read.
If you deter your viewers before they even read a word, your message isn’t worth a bumper.

I think the use of marquees is acceptable. If it is related to the topic in which you are writing about and you would like a particular piece of text to stand out, this is the way to do it.
It’s a phase – it’s cool at the moment but we’ll gradually grow out of it. 😉

A moving avatar, like a waving flag, doesn´t ´draw` your eyes away from reading the text as a marquee´d banner does (remember that a marquee-tagged item moves in the opposite direction from reading!). Also, avatars are limited in size so they are inherently less visible than wallpaper-sized animated GIFs.
Luke, if you really want to be annoying you should make random spots of a very pale yellow in your postings. Makes your stuff definately unreadable 😀 Seriously, i can understand you like to show off your expertise in building animated GIFS with 3000 layers, but i personally think those have a better place to be shown than here.

But really whats the difference with having a moving signature, or having a moving avatar?
They both have the ability to take your eyes off what you are trying to read.

I can understand that some may see the images that members’ have added to their signature, as an irritation and nuisance to you while reading. I openly hope that members who have adopted this form of signature, like myself, take the displeasure of others into consideration as this discussion board is here for all to enjoy, therefore everyone is entitled to voice and complain there opinions on something which gives them bother.
For members who wish to participate in the moving text or image signature sort of trend, I do not see that a large amount of harm can be done. The whole idea of it is to brighten up something, which is normally rather dull and predictable, into a bright and cheerful space. As long as the text or image is within a reasonable size and colour, as has been said, then I cannot see any problems arising from it. Moreover, surely if someone is reading a post they are not going to see the moving image or text till they come to the last couple of sentences? How much distress can this course?
I hope some agreement can come about this issue 🙂

If we have the facility to do all this fancy stuff, then why not? I have now got rid of my “Celebrating 1,000 Posts” banner as the celebrations are now over.
But I’ve changed to a more personal, moving avatar image – brilliant, eh?

As an older member of the forum, and a proud member of Wombat’s old pharts club, I can understand Arthurs point of view as well as that of some of the younger members of the forum. I think Jonesy has it right. I wouldn’t like to see the marquee tag go as it is just another expression of peoples enthusiasm, just make sure it doesn’t occupy half of the page or detract from the main reason we are here, to discuss, disseminate and share information of mutual interest.

This will doubtless tar me with Arthurs brush, but I have to agree with him. The banners are getting to such a proportion that reading text is difficult.
You lads like the “jazzy” aspect the banners give…ok I can understand that. Is there any need to have them 2in high and in bright dazzling colours though? Is there not some way you can shrink or tone them down a bit just to help preserve the sanity of some of the less-youthful (apologies Art!) guys onboard here?
