Its a funny ‘ole thing, but you can sit down and type out summat for the forums and you’ll be convinced that it is absolutely spot on, then you read what you posted the next day….and cringe at the typo’s !!!
And you’ve no idea how many times I read and re-read this before before posting it !!!
Cheers

re foreigner speak better than us : YES
we ahve a kid from india who know more aobutour grammersturcture and spelling than any of us. however he does lack the experience of speaking english the whole time. but give him his dues he is definetly in the “deep end” – having to live and speak english every day – a scary prospect i assume

Yes Jamie, you would really need a spelling checker 😉

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-10-02 AT 06:14 PM (GMT)]You really want to know what I think. I think people who learn English are often better at English than those who speak it through a native tongue. This is because they have had to learn it from scratch. All the theory all the dots and crosses and all the grammar. Where as we wot speak the queens English take it for granted and abuse it some wot.
aint that right guv.

i understand your difficulties 😀 😀 😀 – i could never read what you lot read in a foriegn lanuguage.
well done to all of you
the inability of being able to edit after one hour is a bummer , but unless you could introduce a wrod type spellchecker (as you type) i feel it would be little use (ie by me }>)

RE: Sp[ell Checkers ???
Hand
I think your suggestion to change communication through differing languages might fall over. English is now the international language, and the forum is allied to English-speaking magazines. I don’t know if they are printed in other languages, perhaps they are, but it is probably reasonable to assume that anyone who wishes to use these forums will have at least an acceptable mastery of English.
I do agree that there is a tendency of some members to abbreviate or use local dialogue, which may elude some of us, but that is just one of the characteristics of an international forum.
(This is actually a desperate plea not to go with your suggestion about cycling though languages. I’m too old to start re-learning German, French, Dutch and lord-knows-what-else). x(

RE: Sp[ell Checkers ???
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-10-02 AT 07:35 AM (GMT)]That’s true. For us non english natives, it’s often quite frustrating to argue in a different language. However, I really think that most of the people here have very good skills in English.
2 points however: I’d like to please the natives not to use those abreviations or acronyms that we can’t understand.
In order to make this forum as fair as possible I suggest to change the “official” language every week. Therefore we will contribute to develop the language skills of our english natives mates.
Why not to start with Dutch ??? }>

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-10-02 AT 00:45 AM (GMT)]”wrong ever with my grammer or spelling”
Or that Word doesn’t pick up the wrong word spelt correctly like like ever instead of either…
As long as what you say is legible I think a few spelling errors are OK as long as it doesn’t create ambiguity.
To some my spelling will always be bad as my colour has more letters in it than theirs and though my measureing devices are meters my distances are metres which will also annoy some but hopefully be disregarded by most.
You can always do what I have just done and click on the edit link…
BTW Shorty… your spelling and grammar are fine… as is the spelling and grammar of most posters on this board.

Don’t worry about your English, mate, it’s a lot better than my Dutch, which is non-existent. (I think your’e a resident of the Netherlands, if not, hope I haven’t offended.)
And not all Aussies speak English well, either. You should hear the versions I hear at the local shopping centre – mostly “f… this” and “f… that”..Wonder what they’d do if that word didn’t exist. If you applied a spell checker to their language, it would blow a poofle valve from overwork!!!

RE: Sp[ell Checkers ???
At least you can edit your posts,on the rating system once you’ve rated you can’t edit. You would be surprised how many times I read over what i’ve wrote and then realised I was wrong ever with my grammer or spelling…annoying!Nowadays, whenever I post I just get miceosoft word up and type in to that then copy and paste.Checks all my spelling and grammer and I can also use the theasurus if I don’t like the word i’m using.

RE: Sp[ell Checkers ???
I know, it is a problem. Only found out 2 weeks ago that it is possible to remove all errors by using the edit file (situated under the forum text), since then I could remove the ‘worst’ ones.
