RE: 28 biljion for smoking

28 BILLION – yeah I heard about that, would that not be close to the net worth of the Phillip Morris(PM) company?

“ah….yes can I have that in small bills please”

Thing is PM will have this in the Appeals Court process for ages, and it may be AGES before the defendant sees any money, and even then that may be massively reduced in the end.

Regards, Glenn.

RE: 28 biljion for smoking

1) basically i can buy a pack of cigs in france for half the price as they are in the uk, in belgium its less and they all still have tax on them.

2) i acept that we pay money for them suing the nhs but they have pumped billions into the goverment coffers, and with the low suvial rate for lung cnacer they don’t hang about long to get into their 80s (20 years of state pension later) where they would use hospitials more and more and if their lucky (ver lucky) get a state nursing home.

RE: 28 biljion for smoking

This article just goes to show the differences in our currency exchange rates, because the cost was reported in Australia as $51 billion!

I agree with many of the points raised, particularly the parasites who choose to smoke for years, knowing fully what risks they take in doing so, then sue the tobacco companies for manufacturing the filthy things in the first place when they develop cancer. (Not too obvious I’m a non-smoker, is it?)

As for the companies, I could’nt care less if they went belly up overnight and stopped manufacturing fags altogether. The air would be cleaner and so would the streets.

Another point, Rabie, is the cost to the community of illnesses caused by smoking. I don’t know if your National Health Scheme is still as liberal as it once was, but your taxes will still be going, in part, into the NHS, to keep these dumb-bums alive so they can eventually sue! There are many illnesses caused by smoking and not all are fatal. Even those that are fatal take a long time to complete the cycle and you, and your countrymen, pay the taxes to nurse many thousands of people suffering from smoking-induced illnesses.

However, without the revenue raised by tobacco taxes, I would have to pay even more than I do at present. (Hmmm, might make that a separate thread…) In Australia, the level of taxation on tobacco products is quite severe, although I don’t know how much it is.

Regards

Wombat

RE: 28 biljion for smoking

I LOVE SMOKERS !!!

why ??? – all these gullible prats pay a huge amount of tax and this helps me on two counts

1) i pay less tax than i would if there was no smokers, they die sooner hence less money i pay for their pensions, etc
2) when i go to france HM customs and excise alow me to bring back up to 800 cigerates from the continent (where they are half price) for my (ach hem) “personal” use – everyone who goes to the continet know a smoker who would kindly contribute to the cost of their trip, while a toatlly unrealted }> amount of cigarets are given to tehm for free 😀

i win all round, as i won’t die of passive smoking as smoking is forbinden just about every where

I wouldn’t even give these people a symbolic Euro.

Your point of view makes sense. However I really believe that those sc….bags of tobacco company made everthing they could to hide the truth. I agree that smokers have to pay more for their insurance but what about drunk, junkies , car drivers who participate to pollution etc …. That’s an interesting debate.

People who still smoke are the ones who don’t give a damn about their health, Philip Morris is not responsible. I don’t think these people even deserve one dollar. Either you have been in coma for the past 30 years or you are just stupid.

Justice is something precious, don’t waste it to lawsuits against Morris or Mc Donnalds. These (the so called victims) people are just after the money.

In Belgium they want to let people who smoke pay more for their insurance. I can only support this, because smokers should realise that they are the only ones who can do something about it, not Philip Morris or the judge.

However those guys (tobacco companies CEO’s) lied in sworn testimony in front of a US senate commission. They are liars !!! ,they don’t give a sh… to other peoples life and I think the best way to punish tham is to strike where it hurts the most : the Wallet !!
