I know this may be a really simple question for some of you and that it may be rather stupid of me not to know but here goes.
What does the D in D-Day stand for. What does the initial D mean in D-Day.
I was talking to somebody about aircraft and this question came up and funny as it was not one of us could think what it stood for. There were a few guesses but nobody knew.
The guesses were things like DELTA FORCE, DECISION and DESTRUCTION none very likely unless you know other wise.
So what was the elusive word.

RE: The meaning of D-Day.
Thanks Hand
I do know that it was Operation Overlord but was just speaking generally about D-Day and what that meant and in this case D-Day was the actual day that Overlord was to begin. Hence D-Day is the code word for the Day overlord happened or was to happen and Overlord was the operation.
Does this make sense to anyone???

RE: The meaning of D-Day.
In the same way of thinking, I’d also say that the D-Day stands for the Day with a great D, so, the important day, when things happen.

RE: The meaning of D-Day.
Hi all and thanks for the replies.
I had thought that D had to stand for something but as with all things military it stands for something and nothing.
A330CRAZY: your post of the meaning made the most sense which was that D is merely the code for a day on which an operation would start and that H-hour would be the Hour in which an operation would start so all said and done the Day or Hour could be talked about but noone would know exactly when it would take place hence D-Day.
Everyone elses post also made sense however so I am still a little confused but have accepted the unamed day hence D-Day theory.
Thanks people.

RE: The meaning of D-Day.
If you think that D-Day is coming from french it makes sense.
D-Day is “Jour J” in french. This term is used to design an event that one is expecting for a long time.
Speaking about D-DAy (6th of June 1944) we use to speak about
“le jour le plus long” (the longest day) or “debarquement” (landing).
I wish it helps

RE: The meaning of D-Day.
As far as I know the D in D-Day stands for Desision.
This was the day that the Allied forces of US, Britan comm. forces would land on the europeen mainland. This would be the long feared second front for the Germans (actualy three, they where fighting in Itali to) I do not know in wich way I have to place the word desision in the story due to my not so great knowledge of the English lanquage.
As mentioned earlyer it called operation Overlord and is later known as D-Day. The day that the desision was made to land at the beaches and destroy Germany. I do not think that the name was already pressent at 6 of juni 1944.
Maybe the name came from the fact that they delayed the invasion for one day due to bad weather and they taken the Desision to one day later. But i think this last theory is not treu.

RE: The meaning of D-Day.
This one confused me for quite a while. In fact,it’s a corruption of both French and English. The French were waiting for what they called ‘The Day’,the day when the liberating forces would come.So in literal terms, D-Day means ‘Day-Day’, or mare clearly,’the day of The Day’.
Hope this helps.
