The help instructions tell you how to load a mpeg into your post once its on your harddrive. But Im wondering if someone could tell me step by step how to grab pics off the web and put them in a file on your harddrive using win98.

RE: Other question
Dutchy…goto your user menu icon which is in the forum lobby. Select Edit Profile and there will be a space for Avtar Image. Your pic must be on the net. Copy the link of the pic in the avtar image section. Thats it. 🙂

Other question
I’ve got the picture posting nailed, as you can see in different post of mine 😉
But how do you get those pictures beside your name. I don’t seem to get it done.
regards,
jw

GarryB,
Many thanks for the Infanview tip. I downloaded it and tried it and you are totally right. I also like some of the other software they recommend in their links. I owe you “big time”!

RE: how to post pics
The quickest and easiest way to shrink an image is using a wonderful… and free program called Irfanview. (download it and its plugins from www.irfanview.com).
If you follow Georgi’s very sensible advice to save all related pics into one folder then just open Irfanview and open the first image listed in the folder. If you press the space bar you can view each picture in the folder or the backspace key will take you backwards through the pictures.
Irfanview has many filters for altering images but it also saves jpegs very well… In one of the threads here recently I had a 150k image I wanted to post. I opened it with Irfanview and used the “save as” option to copy it to desktop. (I did this because I wanted to reduce its size only for posting… I wanted to keep the original so I made a copy). Simply by saving it the size reduced to 50k so I didn’t have to reduce the size or colour depth of teh image to post it.
Another advantage of the program is that you can do batch changes.
You can select files from any number of different folders and… say resize them all to 350 by 400 and save the resulting images in one folder. You can also use this function to rename a whole lot of images… If you have copied images from this forum then unless you renamed it when you saved it you probably have folders with files called “3cdb918877cb3cba.jpg” or whatever. Using the batch processing function you can rename them all “AFM0001-AFM9999” or whatever with a few clicks of your mouse.
Another advantage is that the program recognises 41 different picture file types including photoshop layered images (no more waiting for photoshop to open), the clipart from windows (.WMF), animated cursors, and animated Gifs etc etc. It also recognises Avi, Mpeg, and Mov movie formats and 7 sound formats so if you have pictures sound files and movies all mixed in together you can view them all with one program. (Attachments folders for Email is a very common place where this is used…)

RE: how to post pics
i use an extremaly simple piece of scanning software that “shrink” the whole pic. it actualy uses size rations but very often going from 100 to 99 take s off kilobites. i rectly did a pic for mixtec and i went form a 150+kb file to a 20 kb file with little actuall picture size los or quality loss for a huge file size reduction.
paint would just chope the image right ??? it also is crap at saving in jpeg or gif – bmps eat up space like its going out of fashion.

RE: how to post pics
If you don’t hae any software to shrink with then you can use Microsoft paint, its very useful and easy to use.

RE: how to post pics
That isn’t absolutely essential – but is a very good idea, presuming you want ever to be able to find it again. (even if you save to sesktop, you’ll pretty soon lose your desktop under the clutter of saved JPEGs) The art of organizing a hard disk is becoming one of the lost arts. TGILD.
I have set up a subfolder called “pictures” – under “My documents”. Within my pictures subfolder, I have other layers of folders inthe computer-classic tree style – a subfolder for aviation, for general military, for travel photos, etc. Then within my aviation subfolder still further subfolder divisions, one for each of the major soursces I’ve taken photos, Monino, Moscow Air Show 95, Moscow air show 97, etc. another separate subfolder for my web-downloaded photos to keep them separate from my own efforts. Then within eachof these folders… well you get the idea. As many subfolders to file and organize as you need to bring order out of chaos. Then you can use Win Explorer to find whateveryyou’ve filed properly. Personally, I prefer PowerDesk’s file manager “ExplorerPlus”, which is like Windows explorer on steroids. You might be able to find the freeware downlaodable at one of several different computer magazine sites, such as http://www.pcworld.com/
BTW – the reason for putting the pictures file under “My documents” is that i put all my files which I produce – downloads, word processing, spread sheet, everything that is “made” rather than installed, under “my documents” then it is easy to back up the “irreplaceable crown jewels” more easily. Of course, other people might give you differnet solutions, which work just as well for them. but this is the details of what works for one obsessive-compulsive guy.
