[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-05-02 AT 06:47Â PM (GMT)]Considering how well something as bland as the word game has taken off, Id like to suggest a combat sim for something a little more mentally challanging. Heres my idea: We set up two mythical countrys each with a defence budget, then we list fighters for sale to equip these countrys, each member in this forum can claim one squadron or one aircraft depending on how many people join in. Now remember, you buy expensive fighters and your country will have less than the other counrty if they go cheap which will affect the stratagy of the game. Once AFs have been procured, everyday everyone will email in there days activity to an email address that an impartial administrator will post at the end of the day( I recomend someone in the ozzy time zone). Whether it be to wait on standby, go on patrol, attack mission, you have to give headings, alt, armament etc. The next day we will study the missions to see who has intercepted who, with what strengths, and what the logical outcome will be. Each country should have the same number of bases in aproximently same size countrys, but can choose where to position bases. If someone here good in graphics can make a map for these countrys, that would be good.
ENJOY!

RE: forum combat game
I agree what is needed is someone with a av website, I think Tom and elp’s would be great, however I would like to see Tom in the game rather than be an administrator. What is also needed is automation, for example when you join the game, you would just enter your name in a box and click the plane you want. This would automatically deduct cost from you countrys defence budget and log you into a squadron. Once your countrys budget is spent, no more can be aquired and the game starts ( a cheap Visual Basic program that even I could almost write would do for this). There could be private message boards to discuss raids with you squadron or with other squadrons. The point being, you have a choice, you can be a lone ranger and take a chance youll do some damage on you own, or you can work with others and have the obvious strength of numbers. A more complex need would be graphics to watch all the aircraft fly throughout the “day” (time sped up of course), because time is a dimention here, and it would really be a hassle to use compasses and measuring rules to find when planes intercept which. Jonsey mentioned the political factors, I think that that should be one of many side senarios people could develope on their own, for example if to evenly matched fighters meet, they could do their own internet flight sim dogfight to decide the winner. I expect attack a/c like the A-10 and attack helicoptors to be involved in this also, this would have a more direct affect to a ground battle. Infact people could play FPS games to decide key ground battles.Id like to see all kinds of planes offered as choices, everything from F-4s to rafale,to F-16,su-30, F-5s, Hawk, F-111,kfir, L-139 all with realistic costs(ie F-5s have to be alot cheaper than F-16s), the only stipulation to this is that hornets and tomcats have to be on opposite teams.

RE: forum combat game
I think that with the different equipment we should set certain parameters. lay them down in the rules of the game and then use that, so that there is no upset as to whose figures are correct. We could do this using a standard orbat for a country and then work out the specs for each piece of equipment relevant to the game written down in a file. i’d be more than happy to contribute to this. If complexity is needed then the effectiveness of the weapons can be lowered by a factor for example the ECM threat or the weather. which would need to be specified at the start and by a third party from time to time within the scenario- for example taking the weather from around the world, by finding the metars or tafs for airfields around the world. or by visiting a specified weather website.
I would suggest that the scenarios be kept quite short as it could be two or three days inbetween me visiting this site, and like everyone else I cant spend hours at a time on it.

RE: forum combat game
If so much teams, the problem would be for the referee… Ask Tom 🙂
But, hey, that hould really be funny, especially in an “exotic”, modern scenario, with imaginary air forces.

RE: forum combat game
as long as people have a realistic understanding of tactics and the capabilities of what they are using then this is great!
I would like to see this idea come to fruition. Wouldnt mind pitting my wits against some of the guys on this board lol

RE: forum combat game
Sounds interesting, question is though why restrict to two countries? If we get a good number of people on board for this we could create a strategic situation something like the current Spratley Isle’s issue. i.e several states competing for the same pool of resources and factor in political backgrounds, allow for alliances and the such like. i.e
state A is emerging from 30 years in the communist sphere of influence and has military links with the CIS (a team for Garry if ever we heard it!). Its economy is largely aggrarian but it has well developed heavy industrial facilities and is moving, now on its own, into the international arena in areas like commercial shipbuilding and industrial chemical production etc. Its current GNP is $xx billion projected to rise by y% over the next 5 years.
state B has historically been on the xenophobic side, ruled by a dynastic sequence of, benevolent, dictatorships. It has reasonable natural resources in terms of mineral deposits and trades these on the international market. The nation posses a well developed high-tech industrial sector, specifically in the field of electronic component production, although design skills arent quite in place yet. Lack of space limits the capacity of certain heavier industries and, to an extent, population spread. Military relationships exist with South Africa, Israel and several EU states. GNP is one of the highest in the region at $xxx billion and is rising at x.x% for the next 5 years.
etc, etc, etc
We could therefore have teams of “ministers” or have El Presidente and his/her “junta” representing each nation state and develop the military scenario accordingly.
Big job but could be fun with enough interest!!!
Cheers,
Steve

RE: forum combat game
Sounds like a good idea, but it would need a lot of work to setup and run effectivly.
It would be good if we can get it to work but we will see.
