Well, I promised a while ago to Ja that I would show you some of my wildlife pics. These were taken in the Kruger NP, SA.

“Sor dee” or “Sow dee” was supposed to be Saudi, as in Saudi Arabia.

RE: Cheeta pictures
With my northern accent I would say “Tan-ZAN-ee-AR”). “Ken-ya”.
Love the pics by the way Geforce. When I get my scanner and stuff I’ll post my holiday pics (some of them at least) of rain-soaked Brugge, cloudy Oostende, cloudy Antwerp and cloudy Brussels (tell me I’m mad but there is nowhere else like it – where else do they dress a fountain every day in any one of 650 costumes? It’s worth a trip to Brussels just to see what the Manneken is wearing.)

tanzania I pronounce tenzani’ja

These things really confuse me! I think I just use the pronuciation which comes to mind – not very consistent I’m afraid.
How about
“Ken-ya”
“Keen-ya”
“Sow-dee”
“Sor-dee”

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-05-02 AT 08:49 PM (GMT)]Although I have to disagree about the wine. I went to a vineyard in Franschoek, and it really was disgusting! Then again, I also like to drink Guinness and the worst pint I ever had was at the Guinness brewery in Dublin. Strange phenomenon. I will say that Franschoek is a brilliant place though – actually nicer than Stellenbosch I thought.
It is cheap though, isn’t it! I paid about GBP 40 for a rtn flight from JNB to CPT with South African. 2 hours each way on a 737-800. Easyjet and Ryanair, eat your heart out!!!
Oh – Tanzania – never been there unfortunately, but I have heard that you can hire a whole carriage of the train and travel from Lusaka to either Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjiro. Seems like an excellent was to see the “real” Africa. Can I ask a question?
How do you pronouce Tanzania??
I always say “Tan-zan-ear”
But some people say “Tan-zane-ear”

RE: Cheeta pictures
Nice pictures, Mongu.
It’s my third time in SA and still I haven’t seen anything. The continent is so huge, you have no imagination. I don’t know where to start. Kruger was nice for a couple of days, but my brother says Botswana and Namibia are the ultimate challenge. Mozambique is also pretty nice, but I haven’t been in any of those countries (just Zimbabwe). My brother has had the chance to travel a lot, and he said Madagascar was probably the best he had ever seen. He’s in Perth at the moment, but I hope he can give me more info on Tanzania.
If I were you, I’d buy that condo in Cape Town. Cape town itself is nice, but I prefer the small towns just outside CT itself, like Stellenbosh and Franshoek (superb and delicious wine, better than France).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-05-02 AT 06:16 PM (GMT)]Hyena were cool.
At night time, we could track Hyena and follow them to a kill. We saw one and followed it one night…and found a leopard in a tree, perusing a freshly killed Kudu. Absolutely jaw dropping stuff!
Zambia is really hard to get to, you’re right. It is VERY expensive, too. My old man took us all to a camp in the South Luangwa park about 8 months ago and it cost about USD 12,000 for 5 days. That was one of the more affordable camps. I dread to think what the more expensive ones would cost. In a way though, it is good that it cost so much. It means that when you can afford to go, it is not crowded and believe me, it is worth every penny. You are given your own guide (he was a young English guy actually!) and your own driver/rifleman who is usually a local.
Some friends of my parents own a half share in a private game park on the edge of the Kruger. Sadly, it was on the banks of the Limpopo, and got flooded during the Mozambique floods! But you’re right, everything is so cheap in SA (unless they price it up in USD!!). I’m still thinking about buying a condo in Cape Town (I went there at Christmas to check it out). People who can only afford a small 1 bedroom flat in the UK (ie. me!!) can also afford very luxurious condos in the sun, by the beach. Very tempting.
Oh – if you ever do take a safari in the South Luangwa, it is actually a lot cheaper to start in Malawi and cross the border than it is to go direct to Zambia.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-05-02 AT 05:54 PM (GMT)]You have been to Parks in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Well, according to my brother, they are really the best ones in Africa. kruger NP is nice, and easy to get there, but the real “Safari-feeling” is still missing, probably because every 50 km’s there’s a camp where you can buy loads of beer, wash your clothes and eat European style! Zimbabwe is a totally other way of travelling. Two years from now, I hope to climb the Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. That must be a thrilling experience.
Did you ever get any pretensions of jacking in your European living and re-training as a safari guide – something I’d love to try out!
My brother did so. When he was 24, he just left Belgium and moved to SA because Europe was getting too small (and too busy). Not as a safari-guide, but to make money he says 🙂 With the money he earns in SA, you can live as a King, but here in Europe, it’s worth nothing! Live’s too expensive here, so I don’t think he will ever return to his homeland.
Next step is Australia. Little problem is €€€€€€ and $$$$$$$$. So if anyone wants to give me financial backup, I give you my credit account 🙂
My favourite animal was not the Cheeta but the hyena. It reminds me of myself … a sarcastic ##### }>. I took the picture from in the camp, so it’s not the animal who’s locked up.

RE: Cheeta pictures
Magical, Geforce.
Outside of my fiancee’s arms, I have never felt so alive and so happy as when I’ve been in the African bush. Driving along the track…and some elephants decide to cross the road!
What do you think is the best place for safari?
I’ve only been to parks in Zimbabwe and Zambia, though I may have stumbled across the border into Malawi a few times! The Kruger is world famous and is also conveniently near to Jo’burg, whereas some of the others are horrendous to get to – a case of hiring a light aircraft and paying someone to fly you out to an airstrip.
