Belgian Ardennes

Which is the best place to go to in the Belgian Ardennes (Namur, Spa, Dinant or Durbuy?) My Mum wants to see the area but we don’t know which place will be best. It has to be accessible by train.

RE: Belgian Ardennes

Frank I have no intention at all of ever going near Orval, I cannot stand their beer, though the area looks pretty!!! Rochefort and Chimay are pretty good though!!!
The towns are the main things to see, where I can get something good to eat or drink instead of being out in the middle of nowhere. Ardennes towns look nice.:-)

Well, if you want to go THERE, you DEFINITELY need a car, my dear… Or walk miles! One specificity about Province Luxembourg is that their train network is non-existent, and roag network is for at least70% in the north-south direction. The rest is composed of trees and small villages 🙂

Take a roadmap, you’ll understand 🙂

RE: Belgian Ardennes

Thanks for the offer of help Frank. My trip is in September, but I like to plan my Belgian holidays well in advance and spend quite alot of time looking at maps and brochures and things.
I read the other day that three of Belgium’s most famous breweries are in the Ardennes region (Chimay, Rochefort and Orval), but if you’re not into beer then sorry to go on about it.

Thanks Frank. I know for sure that I can easily get the train to Liege, without changing, from Brugge (it goes via Brussels and I’ve used the service before and that was on a Sunday). I thought only the UK had such poor bus services (round here they stop at around 6pm).

Well, then, I’d give you the advice to go till Liege Guillemins, then change train and take the one to Trois-Ponts.
From there, you can take the Bus (one each 2 hours), and visit Stavelot and Malmedy. If it’s on a Sunday, maybe I could help…

RE: Belgian Ardennes

Frank, I have no choice about the train as I can’t drive!!!
It really is a shame if the rail network in that part of Belgium is not so good as I would like to see more of the country than just Brussels, Brugge, Gent, Antwerp, Oostende, Kortrijk and Oudenaarde.

Forget about train! You’ll come to verviers, Trois-ponts, at best Spa. ut not further, and buses are a pain in the a**… And not numerous!

RE: Belgian Ardennes

Hello, thanks for the replies. Geforce – Namur is listed in the Ardennes section of my Belgian brochure, someone is wrong putting the brochure together! All the tour guides in England just relate to Brussels, Brugge, Gent and Antwerp, there is nothing much about the Ardennes in any of them. I will take note of all the place names and see how I can best get there by train from Brugge (I don’t mind changing trains anywhere just as long as I can get there in good time).

In Belgium you can combine everything, Frank. Such a small country, you can visit all of it in just one weekend :7.

Durbuy is really nice, it is the smallest ‘city’ in the world. But with the thousands of tourists, I don’t think it still diserves that title. If I were you Comet, I would visit all of these places, it won’t take more than 2 days. Maximum distance between them is 50 km.

RE: Belgian Ardennes

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-05-02 AT 07:42 PM (GMT)]OK, some advice from an inhabitant.

You have: the Ardennes, with Durbuy, nice little place.
And the Hautes Fagnes: With Spa (a bit expensive, but nice), Malmedy, also very nice, Stavelot (with ruins from a old Abbey, just renovated, so, a MUST) You can easily combine these cities in ONE day. (You also have Waimes, where I’m living, and where there’s not much to see, except road work at the moment 🙂 )

If U want, you can even combine with Durbuy, but then, you’ll have to drive a bit. If you need more advice, just mail me.

RE: Belgian Ardennes

Probably Durbuy or Spa, Namur is not even a part of the ardennes
