PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

Pim Fortuyn, the leader of “Leefbaar Rotterdam”, Holland’s extreme right party, has been shot and is reported to be dead. It just happened a couple of minuts ago when I was watching the Dutch news.

More news to come.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-05-02 AT 11:48 AM (GMT)]I’m sorry, but here we disagree. By constantly trying to push him in the extreme right corner, by asking questions like: are you the Dutch Haider or Le Pen, and by politicians like Tom de Graaf, using Anne Frank for his own political purposes and thus comparing Fortuyn to Hitler, they demonized him, thus creating an atmosphere in which a politically motivated murder could take place. Whether you like him or not has got nothing to do with it.

Shalom,

Jonathan

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

“And when we’re all anti-immigration…”

My point was that Europe has had many colonies that had to accept the emmigration of many different types of people (OZ…)… it wouldn’t matter how the countries that received this influx voted… they didn’t get a say.
Now that there is a flow of people to the countries of Europe you don’t seem to like it… Irony?

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

Well, across the continent these days, whenever a politician is “anti immigration” he gets lots of votes. Europe is changing Garry. And when we’re all anti-immigration…thats when we will have common borders across the EU.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

The sad part is that we will probably see more of this type of assassination by extremists on both sides of the political spectrum (like the South American “Death Squads” of the early 1980’s).

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-05-02 AT 05:38 PM (GMT)]Killing somebody because he’s got another opinion is wrong. No discussion about that. Pim Fortuyn was also very popular in the Netherlands, and eventhough he has made some racist comments, he’s not at all like Le Pen.

Next week there are going to be parliamentary elections. It is expected that – even now the frontman is gone – the “lijst Fortuyn” will still win the elections and that Fortuyn may become prime minister, even though he’s dead!!! Coup de theatre. It sounds like an unrealistic scenario, but Fortuyn became in 6 months to most popular man in Holland and also in Belgium. 30 minutes in the news about Fortuyn, programs are interrepted for newsflashes, that hasn’t even happened during our own darkest hours (dioxin crisis, dutroux-crisis …).

Anyway, I wouldn’t have voted for Fortuyn because I simply don’t agree with his radical right comments. But still, he was a very remarkable person, and he will remain in the hearts of many Dutchmen (and Europeans).

It’s a sad day for democracy, because this was the first time in Dutch history someone was killed for his believes. I think the 15-may elections will be even more weird than in France.

Ohh and Djcross, the murderer was indeed a “greenie”, but he acted alone.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-05-02 AT 07:27 AM (GMT)]A lot of people say that this was a bad day for democracy. I don’t agree. It was an individual who shot Fortuyn, not one of the other parties. Had the hit been ordered by a politician, then it would have been a bad day for democracy, not now.

JJ, it is not right to blame the politicians and media, just because they were anti-Fortuyn. That was the right thing to do. Idiots like him must be opposed. Just like they did in France. That is the only way to stop folks like him. That is what called DEMOCRACY. I don’t think those anti-Fortuyn media actions were in any way responsible for his murder, not even indirectly. They didn’t call for his assasination, now did they?

They have one suspect in custody BTW. A white male, 33 years old from Harderwijk. He’s a left wing radical.

Best regards,

Ference.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

“Regardless of the man’s political views it is inexcusable to shoot him down in cold blood just because his political stand point is different or objectional to that of the majority, “

Yet having political views different from the US or the UN makes you an “Evil State”… Saddam H. would be gunned down in a heartbeat by most US citizens or Military or Police for that matter.

The news reports all say this Pim Fortuyn was a gay candidate who opposed immigration… imagine being world famous for that?

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

Regardless of the man’s political views it is inexcusable to shoot him down in cold blood just because his political stand point is different or objectional to that of the majority, the vote of the individual is the only way forward no matter how jaded you might become listening to the endless political diatribe that is dished out on a daily basis, the recent controversy in France is a prime example of what can happen if you don’t use your chance to vote and just assume that ‘surely no one will vote for him’.
A bad day for democracy.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-05-02 AT 08:05 PM (GMT)]It seems someone has already been arrested, the motive isn’t clear yet, but I strongly suspect a political motive. I do, however, put part of the blame on some politicians and certain media, who were very anti-Fortuyn.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

There are not hints which could indicate that this has been a political crime. Wait. Couldn´t it be; passional, mafia or even an assault?.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

There are no supspects yet, and it has nothing to do with greenies before you all start. All political parties in Holland said they were 100 % against this terrible attack. Dealing with Pim Fortuyn doesn’t mean ‘killing’ him, in a civilised democracy you can also defeat your opponent with words (even if they are extreme).

Another act by a “peaceful” greenie? Who was it who said “political power comes from the barrel of a gun”? It’s a wonder Le Pen didn’t get whacked by a greenie.

RE: PIM FORTUYN has been SHOT

The Dutch right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn has been shot and critically wounded.

I have understood he is in critical danger

Warmer Dam, Lijst Fortuyn spokesman
A spokesman for his party, Lijst Fortuyn, said he was not likely to survive.

Police say Mr Fortuyn was shot six times and suffered multlple wounds in the chest and neck.

He was attacked as he left a radio studio in the central Dutch city of Hilversum after giving an interview.

‘Militant figures’

“I have understood he is in critical danger. At this moment it looks like he will die within 10 minutes or half an hour,” said Warmer Dam, spokesman of the Lijst Fortuyn party which Mr Fortuyn leads.

Eyewitnesses have spoken of seeing militant-type figures at the media park where the Dutch station is located.

“I saw Pim Fortuyn lying on the ground with a bullet wound in his head,” said television reporter Dave Abspoel.

The reporter said four people chased the gunman, who apparently fired in their direction.

But the BBC’s Geraldine Coughlan in The Hague says it would have been difficult to gain access to the park which is tightly monitored.

Elections

Mr Fortuyn’s anti-immigration party made surprising gains in recent elections.

The party has been predicted to do well in the forthcoming general elections in nine days time, with polls giving him 15% of the vote.

Mr Fortuyn provoked public indignation by calling for the Netherlands’ borders to be closed to foreigners and by describing Islam as a ‘backward’ religion.
