Hey folks!
I am finally able to show you my first attempt at aviation photography with my new DSLR! I recently purchased a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (that’s a 400D for the rest of us) along with a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC lens. The difference between this and my Powershot S2 is absolutely amazing….ive been using it for a while to shoot various things, and had to completely relearn some aspects of my shooting technique; its taken some getting used to. But today, the weather was good enough to take me down to DCA to try it on some marvelous flying machines for the first time! the visibility was pretty good and there was hardly any wind.
Let me Know What you guys think, comments are greatly welcomed.
the Continental 737 shown below took me to Newark Liberty last week. i also whitnessed a Go around, which was pretty cool as it was a while since i have seen one. also, finally getting to use BULB makes night shots a lot more pleasant.
Enjoy

Superb Sam! Loving the night shots
I spent Labor day on the California Zephyr between Chicago and Evmeryville, where I have now reached my final Destination of Oakland.
I’ll be over in Washington a week today, after 3 days here, and two in L.A

The 400D has an auto sensor cleaning system does it not ? Presumably the Rebel version does too…
Anyhow… I like the bulb exposure shots, it’s a great technique.

“…well THAT was unexpected”. The S2 not good enough for you, eh?
Wow. Well done on the purchase, and welcome to the DSLR world. Fun much have you will, my friend. 😀

thanks so much guys, very much appreciated. i too notice the dust spots…..they are easy to edit out during post processing but i have seen them whilst in “the field”, and have just not bothered to do anything about them yet…to be honest, Editing them out in photoshop is a whole lot better than risking damage to the sensor with my clumsiness.
Si, i actually took your advice and went on down underneath the bridges….the hill there is great for those approaches! thanks for broadening my options, its a great spot.
I have had no problems with security at all at DCA…Gravelly point is frequently filled with a lot fo people att with cameras, no necessarily photographing sircraft, but it’s a park so very family friendly. i have, so far, hesitated to photograph inside the terminal, as the TSA are rather paranoid…and there’s a lot of them, so it may not be good to draw attention to yourself in that spot. its a shame, because there are some incredible full on ramp views offered by the panoramic windows.

You got dustspots already?! 😮 :diablo:
Nice shots there. What’s DCA like security wise? Looks like a nice place, specially for the Alaska and Continental shots!
