I thought I’d post this because out of my numberous United flights, the 762 was by far my favorite aircraft. I used to fly on it quite a bit on the LAX-JFK run whilst my cousin was going to college in NY. I would visit him 2-3 times per year. I used to upgrade to business class per my premier executive status, and although the seats in the business class section were old school to say the least, seats 10F and 11F were by themselves on one side of the aircraft with a galley and restrooms in the middle, and they essentially had a little table next to them. I would request 1 of these 2 every time. My last flight to JFK on a 762 was in May of 2003, and I was disappointed to see that they had retrofited the interior with ‘nicer’ seats and I was unable to excperience 10F or 11F one last time. The service in business class between LAX and JFK was outstanding. Those 5 hour flights just didn’t last long enough. Ironically, it’s last ferry flight from SFO to VCV was on my birthday.
Last B767-200 Retires to Mojave Desert
—————————————————-
Earlier this week, the last aircraft in United’s
Boeing 767-200 fleet landed in Victorville, Calif.,
to retire to the Mojave Desert. With our B767-200s coming up on costly heavy
maintenance visits and as part of United’s fleet
reduction plan, the company began retiring this
fleet type in January 2003.Boeing produced 19 B767-200s for United, with the
first aircraft delivered on Aug. 19, 1982. United
took delivery of the last retired B767-200 on April
13, 1983. That aircraft logged 77,122 hours of
flight time and 20,015 cycles. One cycle equals a
take-off and landing.“This aircraft provided customers with reliable and
efficient service, including transcon and Extended
Twin Operations flights (ETOPS), enabling over-water
flying to Hawaii and Europe,” says Terry McNee, who
coordinates aircraft retirements for United
Services. “United was one of the few airlines that
flew the B767-200 fleet equipped with the Pratt and
Whitney JT9D-7R4 engine type, known for its
reliability and sturdy construction.”

Sad. Now that I think of it , I guess UA is the only airline I flew 767’s with.

Never mind George, they’re only round the corner from you so you can pop up now and then and reminisce
True that. In fact, I’m only about an hour drive from VCV, although I’ve never made the trek up there so I can visit the boneyard. Ironically, I’ve driven by it countless times en route to Vegas.
