Manchester – Fog and maydays! *big post*

hey all

here is my contribution from the trip that me, Sam and Adam Kendall did on the 6th February.

The journey down was great – great weather, and even when we approach the station at the airport, the weather looked great. Got off the train and was met by fog. And lots of it. Single runway operations meant we headed to the AVP to see what we could see – ha. We could barely see Concorde, and as for operations – we could only hear the aircraft on the runway. ggrrrr.

We gave up and headed to the Food Court at the terminal overlooking one of the ramps. There we warmed up and listened into the traffic.

An aircraft on takeoff suffered a hydraulic leak, declared a mayday, and I guess, returned to the airport. Fluid contamination on the single runway affectively closed Manchester Airport, and we listened in as Appr put aircraft into holding patterns and sorted out diversion airports.

Eventually the runway reopened and at about 2pm the fog began to lift, giving us good conditions for photography after that. So, all in all, an awesome day!:D
