Hi all, Dull day at BRS oday and my first attempt with the 400D. I am using it on AV mode but the exposure is very dark, I am having to adjust the exposure in Photoshop which I hate doing, any suggestions would be very welcome.
All the best

The Jid workflow is what I use, as Jid himself says, “The Jid Method – Thousands of Ladies can’t be wrong!”

Incorrect white-balance setting can also affect photo results. Don’t know what setting you were using, so it might be worth playing around with that option next time too?
I only just figured that out with my EOS350D, and once you get the right setting then colours look much better. Seems the AWB function (Auto white balance) doesn’t work too well for this sort of shot, whereas correct selection of cloudy, sunny, shade setting etc does make a noticeable difference.
(I assume the EOS400D has similar WB setting functions to the 350D).

Thanks guys for all the advice and look forward to the tutorial, I need it. I am off to NAS Key West tomorrow on a job for 2 weeks so hopefully I will get plenty of blue sky to get some shots.
All the best

These are great pics despite the dull weather! I used to have trouble with the light on dull days, you gradually get used to the settings and they start to come out better. 🙂

Great Start
I will post a well-know tutorial tomorrow for you; i don’t use it, but should be helpful.

I’d try going for a higher ISO, Si.
Your EXIF says ISO200 – and you were still getting quite a slow shutter speed – e.g. the second XL.com shot was 1/320s at f/5.0.
It was pretty dull on Fri, and ISO400 might have been called for. Not sure what the noise levels would have been like from the 400D though.

Thanks for the comments guys, I was shooting using Av mode f5.6 which for the lens I was using (USM 100-300 IS) is the widest aperture, I guess I am trying to concentrate on the jet with a sharp background too much. It just seems to be producing quite dark shots even at that aperture. I am off to the airport again tomorrow and will try with my other 28-135 lens. Thanks again everyone, I really apprecaite the advice.

Great shots, but I still can’t get used to that awful Excel colour scheme! 😡

A very good start with the 400D, the weather certainly didn’t do you any favours though!
Which aperture were you shooting at for most of them? My best advice would be to set the aperture number as high as you possibly can without blurring the shots (this might mean panning to the best of your ability). With wider apertures and slower shutter speeds, more light will enter and the shots will be more in focus. In very dark conditions I might be inclined to over expose by about a 1/3rd or possibly 2/3rd’s.

Si, not a bad effort mate, far from ideal conditions for aviation photography, what did you have set up Av – 8?? Most of them are sharp, the COA looks a little blurry this is where the camera has dropped the shutter speed to achieve your F8.
One days like this mate, you just have to play with the settings, I always shoot Tv, trying to get 1/500 or faster for take offs.
Keep playing its the only way! When the nice weather comes you’ll be primed for action and get some great shots. I think this weekend looks good so get out, I’ll be at LHR!
