LHR, 23/09/06. Hibiscus, Royal Air Force hardware, 'apron action' and LHR at night!

hi all

Travelled to the old smoke yesterday, spending the day at Heathrow with a couple of friends. 09s rwys were in use meaning take off shots were possible from the southern perimeter road.

Took quite a risk by shooting (not that sort, duh) right at the perimeter fence by the road, and indeed a police car pulled up asked us what we were doing, said ok and drove off again. result!

The traffic was normal Heathrow stuff, but then we saw a big red thing taxi out. The Malaysian Hibiscus special livery! 😎 yay! We’ve been waiting all year to see it, so we were rather pleased. Managed to get a few shots, only to find afterwards that the camera was on manual mode and not auto, so the shots were a little blurred. Oh well. 🙁

We then headed off to the car parks by T1,2,3 for the rest of the day. Was quite interested to see that a RAF S&R Seaking helicoptor was at the airport parked on the southern side of the airfield.

Hundreds of birds were gathering around the A380 pier area, and being a danger to aircraft, flares/fireworks were launched in front of us quite a few times to scare them off, never seen that before so that was interesting. need less to say, the birds were not amused, and they promptly returned. lol

The problem with the car parks is that the shots will end up being backlit, becuase we don’t go to the top levels, we’re in shadow, looking out over a bright airfield.

Evening came, so it was time to get the tripod out and do some long exposures. In all, a great day. 😀

Enough from me – on with the shots! 😀

Great shots Adam, the BA 747 in mono just looks great and the Airbus 340 catching the crosswind on take off. The Crabs (Air force) and indeed the awesome professionalism that is the Royal Navy SAR sometimes drop into big airports as part of a training package (high density ATC, SAR drops and casevacs) that they must do a least a few times a year to keep current.

All the best

Si

fab shots Adam wonder why the RAF SAR Westland Sea King HAR3 was at LHR for?

James

that’s what I’d like to know. 😀 It didnt stay for all that long; engines were only off for a short time before they were started up again, it did a short taxi to a spot in front of T4, then took off vertically, heading south.

thanks everyone for the comments! 🙂

Excellent shots. I love the slow shutter ones. 🙂

It really annoys me that HS-TGJ was in at Heathrow yesterday. Obviously it’s not the first time it has been in recently, but when it was painted in the Royal Barge colours, the thing never came in!
