EDI clocks over the 8million mark

Excellent news for EDI. I presume it means 8million passengers since last January, it’s the rolling year total? I expect EDI to be well on its way to 9 million by the end of the year! 😀

Capital airport ready to ‘celebr- eight!’
31 January 2005

Staff and travellers at Edinburgh Airport launched a celebration today, as the eight millionth passenger checked in at the Capital’s fast-growing terminal.

The unsuspecting passenger was Nicola Gemmell from Perthshire, checking in for a flight to Geneva in Switzerland with her husband Alastair.

She was delighted as Richard Jeffrey, managing director BAA Edinburgh Airport, made the announcement and presented her with a bottle of champagne plus two return flights to Barcelona with flyglobespan.com as a reward for being the landmark eight millionth traveller.

Nicola said: “This is a wonderful start to our holiday to Geneva – where we are going skiing. We are already regular users of Edinburgh and we’re delighted that we will be back again thanks to the fantastic prize we have won.”

Commenting on the record-breaking achievement, Richard Jeffrey said: “This is a momentous day in Edinburgh Airport’s distinguished history and I want to thank our loyal passengers for helping us to reach this historic milestone.

“This achievement is down largely to the efforts of all the people who work at Edinburgh Airport and I am proud to be leading such a committed team during one of the most exciting periods of growth in recent years.”

Today’s excitement won’t be restricted to the lucky eight millionth traveller – passengers throughout the terminal will be invited to join in the fun and celebrations. A local band from Kirkliston will be there to entertain the crowds and the airport staff will receive prize giveaways from a host of airport companies throughout the day.

The record-breaking eight million passengers in a year is one more milestone in Edinburgh’s growing success story and underlines its status as one of the fastest growing airports in the UK. The past ten years have seen annual passenger numbers rise from 2.7 million passengers in 1994 to 8 million today – and the numbers keep growing.
