For instance, I could suggest that the A340-600 has kicked royal butt of the mighty Boeing 747 since its introduction…

Oh realy, so where are the 2000 A340-600’s then? :diablo:

I am talking mere numbers here. Thats all. 777 has sold more than the A340.. the plane Boeing designed the 777 to compete against.

Hey,

Excellent news for the 777 Team, hopefully the current developments of the 777 will prove just as popular. It’s an extremely popular platform for the airlines, and the numbers show that they like them – hope to see many many more orders for the 777, truely an excellent aircraft, with superb looks.

However, you will find that the A330-300 overlaps onto the Boeing 777-200’s statics ever so slightly, a couple less seats, more range, and less cargo space. A330 295/5650nm, B777 305/5210nm. Clearly you could substitute an A330-300 for a Boeing 777-200. However, with the advent of the Boeing 777-200ER, the 777 easily surpasses the A330-300 – more seats, more range, more cargo space. You cannot replace the B777-300 with an A330, you would need an A340 – namely the -600, as the 777-300ER even surpases that in the forementioned terms.

Welcome back

And A much more sensible answer 🙂

it is not… and you are very naive to try and say so.

The 777 is targetted at the A340 variant. Its payload and range show this.

Fact of the matter is, despite launching after the A340, the 77 has nearly twice as many orders and far more deliveries.

Just like the A330 kicked the 767’s ass, I bet you’d have no problem tlaking about that.

It you want to put it that way… though naturally it cuts both ways, and there are no end of comparisons to be made…

For instance, I could suggest that the A340-600 has kicked royal butt of the mighty Boeing 747 since its introduction…

The fact is most if not all of the 777, 330 and 340 models overlap and compete with each other to a degree. Remember that all of this started with your ”eating shorts” gratuitous comment, and my simple pointing out that the 777 competes with various models of the A330/3340 family, not with just one variant.

Well I think you can say that the A330-200 is more comparible with the 767-300/400er, while the A330-300 which has the same size as the A340-300 is also a competitor of the 777-200.

Capacity-wise the A330-200 might or might not be a rival of the 777. Perhaps it sits between the 767 and the 777. But the A330-300 most certainly is a direct 777 competitor.

What market is it then?

767-300ER market, which untill the A330 belonged completely to Boeing.

The A330 and A340 were designed together to cater for the long haul market. Loosely interpreted as 747/767/777 challengers, although there are obvious overlaps between the family. Its not really fair to compare them as they aren’t direct competitors.
