Air India returning to MAN in 2005?

A couple of Indian websites are suggesting A-I are about to expand their network, with one destination mentioned being Manchester. However….one site says “A-I has decided” and the other states “A-I is mulling over the decision”.

They originally served MAN from 1997 starting with a 2 weekly A310 via Rome (and not what they wanted: 4 weekly non-stop 747) which was later increased to 4 weekly A310 via Rome in 1999 but in 2001, just about 3 weeks after signalling their intention that the service was one of the “key ones” (their words, not mine) to have extra capacity/frequency they announced the decision to withdraw it.

Having said that, BHX would be a better choice given the larger Indian community in the Midlands area (and they did serve BHX in the 1970s using 707s).

Both countries have the right to go to 40 per week and MAN is a bit more than a rumour….it’s the words of one of the A-I board!

Thats an interesting question Humberside.Just quoting from airliner world and I know it mightnt be 100% accurate but it says-Under the revised agreement,
”A further 21 weekly frequencies have been made available”
Now the new frequenices are available on UK-India routes so I would imagine that it meens from any UK airport. It doesnt say anything about India-UK routes so I wouldnt be sure if new frequencies are available to Indian carriers.
However if they are Air India would have problems securing slots to operate 21 additional flights so maybe LGW would be an option or as it has been said MAN.
I hope that wasnt a load of mumo jumbo.

Well if not Air India, how about Air Sahara or Jet Airways. Also what does the UK-India bilateral says about UK regions(including Stansted)-India
