Finally! I have joined the DSLR age of camera’s. Today i popped along to Jessops and got myself a Canon 300D DSLR and Sigma 50-500mm Lense! At last i will hopefully be able to obtain the clear quality shots i have wanted for so long. The camera will take a bit of getting used to first though – so dont expect anything great right away… the lense weighs a frigging ton! I’ll hopefully have a few snaps up online tomorrow, weather permitting of course – if it rains, i wont be going near an airport unfortuneatly.
I also got a 1GB memory card with the camera, enabling me to obtain up to 350 pictures (in the highest quality) on it.
So heres to many happy snappings! 🙂

Review at Canon A95
Seems to be regarded as good as a general snapshot camera, but it won’t really give you the reach for aviation photography as the long end of the zoom isn’t long enough, unless you can get pretty close to the airplanes. So, YES, providing you understand what you’ve bought it for.
Andy
Cheers Andy, will be used mostly for non-aviation purposes, but hopefully 1st try off it will be on BD589 to LHR next Thurs!

I think you’ll find the 1GB card will give you up to 450 pictures – the 350 is estimated by the camera based on a standard file size, but as JPEGs are compressed when being written to the card, often more will fit on the card than the camera initially expects – this is especially true for aviation photography where the [hopefully] large areas of blue sky are compressed by the JPEG compression routines meaning that file sizes are often smaller than “normal”. You’ll find its wierd – as you shoot you’ll find that sometimes the number of remaining images before the card is full does not go down – but its just because the camera is constantly re-evaluating based on how much of the card is actually used by the pictures already on the card.
On the other hand, if you shoot RAW (for ultimate quality) then the card will only take around 130 images.

Excellent stuff Andy – you’ll like the camera, it’s very good indeed. With a lens that big, I’ll be expecting some special pics from Airshows next year too! 🙂

I’ve got the 3310 with a 40gb hard drive and am very happy with it. Basically it is just a hard drive with readers for various kinds of memory sticks/cards. It can copy the contents from the stick/card onto hard drive. The memory stick/card can then be formatted in the camera and shooting can start again.
Some of the tanks also have a screen on which you can view the photos. I got the cheap version though so can’t do that! 😀 Mine does play MP3 though.
Battery life is around a full hour and a half. That’s around 2560mb worth assuming you won’t play MP3s (massive energy drain). It has a fixed battery so you can not replace them! Copying 256mb from a USB2 card takes about 5 or 6 minutes. A USB1 card takes longer.

Congrats. I think I am going that way as well before years end. Almost bought myself a Nikon D70 yesterday but the store (Dixons) did not have batteries! Since I am not going to fork out that much money without having tested it at least once I passed.
One word of advice. 350 frames is not a lot when you have a 2 or 3 days trip. If you intend to go on a longer trip getting yourself an image tank is definately recommendable. I’ve got one with a 40gb hard drive for 235 euros (+/- 160 pounds). It handles 7 kinds of memory cards, so even if you decide in a few years to replace your camera you can still use the tank.
