Spanish airline Iberia intends to take discount airline Ryanair to court over what it sees as unfair deals with regional Spanish airports, Iberia Chief Executive Angel Mullor said.
Iberia also will join protests against Italian government aid to state-owned carrier Alitalia, which have already been brought before the European Commission by British Airways.
“We are collecting information right now about what Ryanair is doing in different Spanish airports,” Mullor told reporters on a trip to Guatemala earlier this week. His remarks were embargoed until Thursday.
“As soon as we have the minimum amount of information for the case to be admitted, we will bring demands against that airline,” he added.
While Ryanair remains Iberia’s principal concern in Spain, Mullor said there were indications that Spanish carriers were also receiving aid from certain regional authorities, notably in the northern regions of Catalonia and Cantabria.
Iberia’s chief executive said a EUR400 million (USD$494.4 million) emergency loan by the Italian government to Alitalia in July clearly constituted state aid.
The Italian government has also ordered European airlines not to undercut Alitalia’s prices.
“British Airways has already brought a complaint and we are joining it,” Mullor said. “Once an investigation is opened, then we will all add more information.”

No doubt Ryanair will cry “victimisation!” or some such drivel. As I’ve said before, lets have a level playing field ( and I mean level ) for both the LoCos and the full service guys, but then again could the LoCos survive without the subsidies??

As soon as we have the minimum amount of information for the case to be admitted
This word minimum is somewhat suspect. It makes the whole lawsuit seem more like a fishing expedition to get as much as they can.
