Bye Bye Britannia

It was going to happen sooner or later.

The entire Britannia/Thomson airline fleet will be rebranded Thomsonfly, with more investment in the airline fleet with extra planes and a refurbishment programme.

And more importantly, jobs will be lost all over TUI as part of re-structuring.

Never understood ‘Thomsonfly’, what’s wrong with the much more logical ‘FlyThomson’?! Not imaginative anough, so they just switch the words?!

probably because it sounds like ‘fly emirates’

Very sad indeed that they’re ditching the name. I know it was a little corny, but their old “Britannia Royal Service” did make the passengers feel a little special.

So if they’re using Thomsonfly on what was Britannia, does that mean they will be selling “Britannia” charter tickets on Thomsonfly.com? At the moment you can buy Britannia charter tickets in either direction through Thomsonflights.com but maybe this will change. You can get offered Thomsonfly tickets on Thomsonflights.com if you enter BHX or EMA in your search criteria. It assumes you won’t mind CVT if you asked for either of these.

Its sad to see these great charter airlines not being able to decide of they’re “No-frill/Lo-cost” or not. Bring back hot towels!!!

The Britannia brand was well-known after 40 odd years and had built up a good reputation. It had won many awards for its service over the years. It moved with the times but still stayed true to its origins as a world-class IT carrier.

Now they are closer to the no-frills operators, they have ditched their name and calling themselves ThomsonFly. I wonder how many of its loyal staff were consulted about the name change. No doubts many staff are just as sad as passengers to see the once proud Britannia name dissapear along with their jobs!

Ok, danairboy, make up your mind. I quote ‘It moved with the times’. Yes, it did. The fact that it didn’t move in the direction you’d prefer is the reason for your anger over the current changes.

‘how many of its loyal staff were consulted about the name change.’

Probably the same number who paid for new aircraft, new uniforms, hot meals and other services. It’s nice to keep your employees informed, but you don’t have to. Britannia was just a name, same as BEA, BOAC, Derby Airways etc. The name change is unimportant, the service is what counts and in the current climate of fierce competition companies have to take steps to ensure their survival. That, is exactly what they have done.

I wish Id said that, Pablo that was one of the best posts I have read on this forum. You have hit the nail on the head. Charter airlines only have themselves to blame for their financial woes!

pre-bookable seats

I think this concept was one of the factors that contributed to the downfall of charter airlines. In the days before pre-bookable seats everyone was treated equally. The great British public saw this idea (and the paid-for meals) as charter airlines cashing in for every penny they could and henceforth ditched them in favour of the growing locos.

Whats next? I bet this marks the begining of the end for hot-meals for sale, pre-bookable seats, smart cabin crew uniforms and any other semlance of service that have so far remained.

This is very sad news, have fond memories of Britannia, they were my first airline I flew on when I was a wee nipper. I thought there service was always top notch and there fleet was modern and very punctual.
It mentioned in the press statement that they are upgrading there fleet, any ideas on what they will be acquiring?

A sad, sad day.
