I worry about these airports. All three islands have special place in my heart, particularly Jersey. My point is this as each of these island airports have relativley short runways, what is being done to ensure these destinations have regular air links in the future. Certainly many of the new mainline and regional jets will struggle to get into these airports with full loads.
As lots of the older jet types which served these airports are now in the processs of being phased out such as the 737 classics and 146s, will the runways at these destinations need to be expanded, if possible? or will manufacturers try and produce an aircraft with the necessary field performance?
I worry about the continuation of BA services to JER and IOM post 146, as they stopped operating to GCI because of lack of suitable equipment.

Ah, yes, happy days! 🙂
The only time me wife has flown on the jumpseat with me was on that route. When we got to JER she asked we we kept saying it was “scary”. I politely explained to my nearest and dearest it was actually Skery! Daystopped, had lunch, watched the airshow, flew home – a perfect day out!

Flying up A25 in the Saab was my favourite view. on a clear day the views of Devon, the Bristol channel and all of Wales were simply spectacular.

However the usual once daily flight MAN-JER increases to about 6 daily on Saturdays due to the charters, which I think includes every type in the fleet?
Yep, it’s like the Whacky Races in the crewroom at MAN on a Saturday!

MAN-JER is a 146 route Mon-Sat. Mon-Fri will (normally) see a 146 have this schedule:
MAN-FRA-MAN-JER-MAN-ZRH-MAN.On at least 2 occasions in August an RJ100 has operated the MAN-JER-MAN-ZRH-MAN sectors
Sorry ole boy, but not entirely correct. BACX (to be entirely correct!) operate EMB-145, DHC-8 Q300 & RJ100/BAe 146 aircraft to JER from MAN. I flew a DHC-8 Q300 to JER from MAN 10 days ago, closely followed by another DHC-8, plus RJ100 & EMB-145’s were also plying the route that day too. I’m also operating a DHC-8 Q300 down there on Saturday this week!
Regading the island routes mentioned. I’ve been flying commercially in and out of 2 of the 3 islands mentioned (IOM & JER) in one capacity or another for the past 11 years. IMHO, the routes are safe, it will just be a question of who operates them & with what. IOM has seen some expansion with Euro Manx, Eastern have only really just picked up what BA sold off/moved off (however you wish to view it).
Regarding a/c type – as has been mentioned, there will always be a suitable a/c about whether it be a regional jet or turbo-prop. The deck gets shuffled occassionally but it’s still the same cards!
As an example, Manx Airlines used to fly to JER from IOM via DUB-CWL, twice a week, daily in the summer. The DUB-CWL element was dropped and a J41 did a daily flight, operating a JER-DUB-JER in between. That part was dropped and just an IOM-JER-IOM route was operated with a J41, the crew daystopping for 4.5 hours in Jersey (I loved those trips – got all my Christmas shopping done cheaply & got paid to be there!). Then it became a midday back-to-back service, then it was finally dropped altogether.
And that is just one route! I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the IOM operators picking up the IOM-JER route again, but who with what…..who knows!
Rest assured Danairboy, your ickle JER will be fine!

Jersey is basicly tax free business heaven my aunt uncle and 2 cousins live ther and we visit them over easter it costs £200 at least with flybe and basicly most of the island isnt catered for holiday makers there is gorey which has a lovly beach and cafe abd a few others but its a v.rich island with people like colin montgomerie ian woosnam etc. my aunt may be forced to move out to their villa in florida as it is becoming too expensive to live there. and the runway cant be extended unless it goes over cliff and built on stilts like maderia funchal as on other side of other runway is farms and houses flybe are concidering a319’s and 737-700 for their new fleet and i think thats the biggest it will take for a long time.

Realistically, the tourism days are behind Jersey now. The place is too crowded, which means that prices will be naturally high.
Maybe there could be a high end tourism niche, but for now the biz/locals market is where it’s at.

LOL @ Kev just what I am always thinking!
I think LBA has had 4 flights to Jersey on a Saturday this summer (3 x BMi ERJ, 1x BA ERJ).

Actually demand for JER flights appears to be as strong as ever through the Summer months. We may have operated more JER flights this summer, if it weren’t for the fact that our ER4 fleet was in demand from IT operators.
The runway length at JER can pose problems for ER4’s, under certain conditions, but its not been a major issue for us. GCI is out of bounds, as the performance limitations are too great to allow for viable operations with an ER3 or ER4.
