IL-76s have been banned from the UK and most of Western Europe for quite some time now, due to noise regulations. Waivers are sometimes (read – only rarely) granted for one-off flights, but only where the aircraft is operating humanitarian relief flights. Trans Avia Export is apparently the commercial wing of the Belarussian Air Force, and this aircraft is going from Nottingham East Midlands to Haiti with a full load of aid tomorrow. Despite the dire weather, it made a pleasant change – hopefully it will be brighter for its departure tomorrow!

Another noise-exempted relief flight this afternoon, this time for Sudan. ZS-PAE is a new registration for African International (not even any photos of it on a.net – yet!) so quite a nice one to get in NEMA. AIA DC-8s do visit the UK, but not the 54Fs which are not stage-3 compliant!

Oddly enough, the security guard on duty at the back gate the day I took this was unusually friendly – he let us inside the security gate to get a decent angle on the Trigon YS-11 without the fence in the way.
I think he was bored and glad of the company, to be honest.
Try it nowadays….. 🙁

Oh, I remember that IL-76 at SEN… In fact, we parked “our” PA-28 G-BSIM right next to it when we flew in to take some photos – amazing how much friendlier was the security guard when he could see we’d arrived by air!

That’s what I mean – a year or two ago. At one time, these things were almost ten-a-penny – we even had one “based” at EMA (UR-UCH) for a while. But now, due to the Brussels Beaurocrats!!! 😡 😡

PS: This one’s an IL-76TD (commercial transport), but was at one time an IL-76MD with a gun turret in the tail, now covered over… I think that IL-76s are magnificent beasts, but sadly as I said we don’t get to see them over here anymore 😡
