The safety demonstration

A few years ago it looked as if the stewardess in the aisle was on her way out as more and more airlines used the In-flight entertainment system to display the safety demo.

I always found this much less effective than the manual demonstration. Often the sound on the video was impaired and the picture flickery and of variable quality. It seems many airlines have gone back to the old-fashioned but most effective cabin staff demonstrations.

Despite having heard it hundreads of times and having flown in all types of aircraft, I always listen attentivley and am always aware of my possible escape routes in an emergency!

Nice to hear some of you are polite and pretend to pay attention even if you have seen it before. It used to bug the heck out of me when I was a cart tart doing the manual demo and having people talk all the way through it or holding up their broadsheets to ensure every knows how often they fly by their ignoring of the safety demo. Rest assured in an emergency, the same people are giving themselves neck strain listening to the revision demo. It is a legal requirement to ensure all pax are briefed. It may not look too macho doing it but i know noone would have cared when they need the info for real.

Now I’m up the front seats, I always acknowledge the fact that my pax have probably heard the demo many times, possibly even that morning but please refresh your memory and allow your fellow pax the same privilege. Just courtesy really. Who knows, one day you may need it for real?

if you’ve been on the damned airplane dozens of times and could actually do the demo on behalf of the crew…

.

Would concer with Boeing 737 for me and my dad could easily fly the A320 let alone give a demo with the amount he spends weekly flying bmi A321s from BHD to LHR return!!!! (He knows alot of crew by name!!)

Ref post #3 – they would regret their nonchalance if there was a real emergency!

I agree about the importance of paying attention to the safety demonstration and always listen and watch. However, on the Virgin 744 outbound to SFO the other week, we had a manual demonstration and I couldn’t see where they were pointing to – I’m a mere 5′ 4” (hence the dwarf part of Duesseldwarf!!). On the return sector, we had the cartoon-style version on the PTVs and it was so well done. Despite giving the important message, it was made to be humourous and attention grabbing and I would imagine that it is more likely that people did actually pay attention to it. Also, as it was right in front of my face, I didn’t have to strain to see.

On every single flight I’ve been to the flight attendants have pointed out the emergency exits during the safety demo. I’d imagine this is a legal requirement to all airlines.

I try to at least watch them and pretend to be interested during the demo- I think it’s a bit rude if everyone’s reading the paper or looking out of the window while the poor people demonstrate the use of a lifejacket.

A few weeks ago I was on a UA flight SFO-LHR in the first row of biz class… One of the first things UA say in the safety demo is “There is a card in the pocket in front of you that explains these procedures. Please take it out and study it carefully…” I actually did this, and the old-granny who was doing the demo said “Hey, you’re the first person I’ve ever seen actually take that thing out when we ask them too…” Got some laughs from the other passengers, none of whom looked at the cards. Of course, by that stage, I was too committed and had to listen attentatively to the rest rather than go back to the paper!

I noticed that on my recent Iberia flights.passengers dont listen. What i also found weird was that although Iberia use video screens for their safety briefing the cabin crew still point out the exits etc but they have 1 in buissness class for 3 or 4 rows of passengers and 1 in at the start of economy for every other row.Would it not be better to space them out or have 3?
