British holiday jet aborts take-off

A jet carrying 275 British holidaymakers and eight crew had to abort take-off when engines malfunctioned and a fire broke out on one wheel.

The Thomas Cook Boeing 757-300 bound for Manchester had been secured for take-off and was half way along the runway at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus when the captain pulled out of the take-off manoeuvre.

He was alerted by three warning lights flashing on the flight deck indicating a possible, “engine over-run”, the airline said.

After the brakes were put on a small fire broke out in the braking system of the left back wheel and the airfield fire service was scrambled.

The passengers were put on another plane and flown home following the aborted take-off at 7.10pm on Wednesday.

Shaun Robinson, of Thomas Cook Airlines, said: “The captain carried out a text book style procedure on the runway following a warning indication to a possible engine problem.

“The aircraft reacted correctly to the captain’s controls and the fire service turned out as a precaution. The safety of both passengers and aircraft was never compromised.”

BA flight in emergency landing

A British Airways flight from Uganda to London was forced to make an emergency landing at Entebbe International Airport after an engine shutdown. There were no injuries.

Flight BA062 took off with 177 passengers from Uganda’s main airport as scheduled when one of the Boeing 767’s two engines shut down, BA said.

Pilots turned the plane around and returned to Entebbe, 20 miles south-west of Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

“As the captain didn’t have the opportunity to dump fuel, the aircraft landed heavy and burst three tyres on landing,” the company said.

There were no injuries and the passengers were taken back to the terminal.

Some are expected to fly to Nairobi to catch the next available flight to London.

The airport was shut down while crews replaced the tyres so the plane could be towed safely off the runway.

Both sound bad. I can confirm the 753 is G-JMAA.

I hope the 767 I end up on in November is a little more reliable. 🙂

BAs 767s go, in Africa, to: Entebbe, Lusaka, nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Accra, and Luanda. They must all go there for a good reason.

Its time the 777 was put on the Entebbe route. The 767 in BA service should only serve routes to Europe and thin US routes.

Get rid of the 767 for Lusaka and Entebbe, please BA!

The engine had a gear-box failure and just shut down passing through 20,000ft, and landed in Entebbe a little overweight. Believe she is still out there (G-BNWI is the 767 involved)

Although it does lead to a few extra problems. The BA 767 fleet is being fiendishly unreliable at the moment.

Although its perfectly safe, and this is no dirogatory comments towards BA and there engineering staff, but hearing that the 767 fleet is being troublesome,is not the kind of thing people want here or think about
