Two airliners arriving at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California nearly collided last month due to a mix-up of air control, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
The LAX air control tower may have placed both planes on the same runway on Aug. 19, the Times reported quoting an airport report.
One Southwest jet was in position to take off at the end of therunway, when one Asiana jet was approaching the airport. But the collision was prevented when the Asiana jet’s captain saw the Southwest plane and took action to avoid it.
The two jets flew within hundreds of yards in that time, the report said.
The incident is the closest call at LAX in at least four years, and air traffic controllers blamed it on old radar systems and understaffing during a busy Friday-afternoon rush.
US National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident at the LAX, which is the fifth busiest world airport.

It worried me when I read the title as I’m in LAX right now.

Those things happen daily and most of them are not published
That what the pilots are trained for and prepared to control.

Wow, Im hearing alot of these near misses, maybe that shows how air travel has grown!
The airspace around LAX is very very congested. The whole LA basin area has a lot of air traffic. A lot of news and police helicopters, private planes liek cessnas and pipers and then you have the domestic and international passenger jet traffic.
Boy, I wouldn’t wanna be a pigeon in those skies!
