A380 will have wider seats

FORGET the fast food outlets, bowling alleys, duty-free shops and in-flight casinos.
The reality of the new double-decker Airbus A380 superjumbo, due to land in Australia in 2006, will be more of what you get on every other aircraft: seats.
But they are likely to be wider and more spacious than existing seats with reduced operating costs that could mean cheaper tickets.
Airbus also says the plane will be significantly quieter and cleaner, reducing harmful emissions with a per-passenger fuel efficiency roughly equivalent to that of a small car.
The European manufacturer has already built its first test A380 and is planning a maiden flight for early next year.
While it still expects airlines to use some of the extra space for frills such as stand-up bars, larders, business centres and areas where passengers can socialise, a senior Airbus executive yesterday described some early claims about the plane as “imaginative”.
Airbus customer affairs vice-president Alan Brown told a briefing in Sydney that he expected the 50 per cent extra floor space available on the A380 to translate into wider seats and aisles with more storage space.
Passengers on average would each get about 10 per cent more space, but each seat would cost the airline 15 per cent less to fly.
“The A380 will allow airlines both to make air travel more affordable by ordinary people and to offer their passengers a more relaxed and stress-free way to travel,” he said.
Qantas has ordered 12 of the giant aircraft.

Can you make the aisle narrower? Or is there an international standard aisle width??

Give a 3+3 seating arragement I strongly believe that being in the middle seats I would notice a 2 inch increase for the whole cabin. For the man in the middle it is practically 0,6 in more room.

How would that me?

Those 2 inches would be shared between 6 seats.

So you would get less than half an inch per seat.

Ah right Ill have to take your word on it because I never saw the comments.

I promise you now, its true. He even went on to call me childish. Such outright cheek and in public too.

No doubt he will post here and refute it. But I have a witness. A respectable witness.

When did he say that?

I’m sure you remember the large thread about the virgin atlantic A346 order?

I think it was in there. The Thread has been deleted. But I assure you it was a public outburst against me which was well below the belt.

I dont think he is, I think he is just expressing his opinion.

I have to agree with Bhoy, an A320 does feel more spacious to me than a 737, dont know why, just seems more ‘airy’.

You don’t think he is?

Did you see him attacking my frequency of posting?
Trying to preach to me that I shouldn’t post so often.

Then moving on to imply that all I post is meaningless drivel.

Sandy, Sandy, man you’re touchy today. Has reading those Swiss newspaper articles I posted yesterday turned you into that much of a teuton that you’ve lost your sense of humour?

Look, for all that I love the seating on a 757 (hey, it’s a 757), I’m just not so keen on the same arrangement on a 737. I don’t know why, I just am (possibly because the 73 has the ugliest nose known to mankind). Call it psycological if you will, but the 320 Series seats just seem roomier, even on easyJet with sod all legroom (you saw the pics in my flight report?).

Now lighten up. As regards the 380 seats, I don’t see how they can make them wider, unless the cabin is significatly wider… I would, however, expect to see a little bit more seat pitch…

I’m not uptight.

I’m just fed up of Matt’s constant attempt to discredit me and my input.
Always finding fault (be it true, fabrication or simply irrelevant) with what I say.

He’s like Grey Area’s Doppelganger! (no offence GA)

not as much as you burst out of a 737’s seats in comparison to an A320’s, anyway… 😉 :p

Remember, seats are down to the airline. Airbus and Boeing and design and suggest what they want. Its the airline that ultimately decides what seats are going into their aircraft.

So realy basing a decision that one is better than the other because of seats is not entirely accurate and by no means fair.

its not an extra 2inch per seat.

It an extra 2 inch for the WHOLE fuselage. IE the fuselage is only 2 inches wider.

I would certainly notice an extra 1 or 2 inches if it was per seat.

I know I would notice an extra 2 ” width on the seats, lets hope the airlines use the space to give cattle a bit more comfort rather than more seats.

Oh shut up.

I know the cabin is generally brighter… but that is also down to the airline.
I was merely saying a passenger would not notice an overal 2 inch notice unless they had a tape measure with them.

Think before you burst out like that.

Passengers might not notice the extra one inch, or whatever it is. However, the A320’s cabin is generally alot brighter, it seem the overhead bins are further up, etc which also give the illusion of more space. Overall, this is why the “Joe Public” feel the “extra” space.

its not an extra inch per seat. its 2 inches all together on the width of the cabin.

Utter nonsense. No way would notice an overal 2 inch difference
