Hi,
Im a school leaver in Hertfordshire, near Luton airport and I have applied for 2 modren apprenticeships with Lunn Poly and First Chioce. I got turned down for both, because I was too far away and the other there were no vacancies.
I would like to know whether there are any oppertunities in my local area, as I have searched for ages, with no success either in a Travel Agents or at Luton Airport. I would like to do the NATS Air Traffic Controller course in the next few years, when I have more experiance. My only alternative is an office job in my llocal town, which I dont really want to do.
If it helps I have 9 GCSE’s A*-C, 5 AS LEVELS and going (hopefully) to have 4 A Levels.
Thanks
Ashley

ZB, I hope you don’t mind me saying this but you need to change your approach. Don’t let anything be a problem. They probably get loads of people e-mailing them all the time. What they don’t get so often is people turning up on the doorstep saying “what can I do to get involved?” That’s the sort of determination I’m talking about. Age or driving license is almost immaterial. Go there and knock on doors…literally.
T5, great stuff. I hope you’re successful and we get to meet.

Get yourself on their doorsteps and show them how determined you are to carve a career from aviation.
This is what I’m hoping to do with Virgin Atlantic next week, although the chances of me actually getting a job with the airline are very slim.
For the next 2 years, I’m still going to be a full-time student studying for a degree. I live 25 miles from Heathrow Airport and I’m only 19!
I’ll wait and see. Although no convinced that I’ll be offered a job with the airline, I guess you have to be in to win it. 🙂

im only 18 and they say that you have to be a minimum age of 19 does this matter? I have e-mailed lets of people and have had a lot of help from the connextions people. I think I would be able to handle the cabin service and I think that MOnach and Easyjet would be really good airlines to work for.

As well as EZY, Monarch, Britannia, etc there are quite a few bizjet operators at Luton. Most people get started in aviation by pushing hard for what they want rather than waiting for a scheme to come and gobble them up. Get yourself on their doorsteps and show them how determined you are to carve a career from aviation. They want go getters in their ranks.

Why not apply to EZY or FR, given that both have recently announced expansion plans at LTN?

Well, you could go for Cabin Crew or Airline ground staff. Just to get you in the business.

Aircraft Maintanance possibly?
If you want my opinion id go to university if i was you as if you do get into aviation industry you could fall back on that…

What else is there that I could do now?

You have the right qualifications for ATC as long as one of your GCSEs is in english and one in maths. You dont even need A Levels for ATC!!
There are no apprentice thingys for ATC its just the course you go on if you accepted. You also will need to be fit enough to pass Class 1 caa medical but the ATC one is slightly different. This includes all the stuff about eye sight and weight as eye sight is more so important in atc.
Other than that its the hard selection tests you need to worry about.
